Who Is The Worst in Your Experience at Getting Refund from Closed Credit Card

So I am in the churning Credit Card game for over the past 5 years now, and have had numerous instances where due to various circumstances (Flight cancellations, refunds etc), I have had to contact Amex, CBA & ANZ to track refund in my closed credit card account and to get them transfer the money to my bank account.

This is very important as the banks/credit card institutions can only hold on to the money for 30 days before it gets refunded back to the merchant.

In my humble opinion, the best was Amex. Instant notification in app of refund. 10-15min wait at their contact number, and voila the money got refunded back to me instantly.

2nd Best was CommBank. They took 24 hours to turn around locate the money and refund to my bank account.

The absolute dog piss was ANZ. Never ever I am signing up with this mob. 7 days to locate the money and then 2-3 days to transfer. On one occasion despite me calling and alerting their credit card team of refunds from Amazon, they failed to transfer the money to my account within the 30 day period and the money got sent back to Amazon. I tried contacting Amazon to track the refund but that went no where. After raising a complaint with ANZ they compensated me the refund as a gesture of good will.

Interested to hear other Ozbargainers experience here, as my NAB Credit card annual fee is due in July and I am already looking for another provided and signup experience.

FWP having to wait 10 days for a refund because you're a serial credit card churner who can't hold an account open….

A 10 day wait in my books doesn't fall under your claim of "absolute dog piss". Its not like you didn't get your money back.

they failed to transfer the money to my account within the 30 day period

Did you notify them as soon as the 30 days started?

After raising a complaint with ANZ they compensated me the refund as a gesture of good will.

So all ended well, again, not sure this is really "absolute dog piss" either, as you got your money.

Why are you getting so many refunds on things?

    • +9

Because hes an “absolute dog piss” of a customer.

Probably just ordering/booking many things in the first month to hit the minimum spend, then cancelling the card straight after getting the bonus points.

Yep, sounds like trying to 'scam' the system. Spending up big, getting the points/reward, closing the card and then doing a refund. So as Joe said above, absolute a dog piss of a customer!

      • my NAB Credit card annual fee is due in July

Yeah, but OP's credit card has been open 7 months?!? They aren't cancelling the card after a month like a churner does. I don't think OP is trying to game the system, just a PITA customer

  • I just called ANZ then and was refunded in 20mins? They located the money in 30seconds and took my other bank details.

Getting Refund from Closed Credit Card

Looks like you are gaming the system! Open cc -> buy stuff -> get point -> close cc-> get refunded and keep points!
Not a bad idea, but what did you expect?
In normal usage you would have to face the issue of refunds with CC once or twice but not with all CC that you have open and closed.

    • Looks like you are gaming the system

Then complains about having to wait a GASP 10 days for a refund!

  • Westpac - I closed off my account and fully paid off everything. I then asked chat for a refund on annual fee which they were happy to provide. I can see it in my cancelled westpac credit card account when I login, but the banker refuses to transfer it to my choice account until a statement has been generated with that amount. This can range from 1 day to 30 days depending on when your last statement was generated.

  • I'm not sure what your issue with ANZ was before. I have closed my ANZ card and still keep my Progress Saver Account. About six months after - I repeated 6 months - a vendor refund for a product that I paid using ANZ (It's a faulty product, and they don't re-stock for the warranty). The refund go to my old ANZ card, I have the notification and email about the refunds can't process because I closed my card, and then the refund money transfer to my Saver account.

  • This hassle is the price of churning. Often they are just as hopeless with ongoing customers, so at least you are getting an outcome.

  • Six months after cancelling Amex it started to be charged with a fraudulent charge (via eftpos machine in uk). For a while they aent me a statement with increasing cost, then a charge with a credit. I tried cancelling again, reporting it as fraud, finally afca ceased it all.

  • How's this thread going for you op? Turning out the way you hoped? Lol

  • I agree with ANZ. A sibling used my card without asking and booked some accommodation. A few months later they changed their mind and I had to chase up the refund. I made at least 4 calls over a one month period and each time I was told there was no refund. The final call I made after getting an ARN for them to trace the refund, but they told me an ARN was useless. Put in a complaint after that and of course it turned out the money HAD been refunded the entire time but the poorly trained agents were unable to see it.

You must have a really crap credit score then…

  • Never had any issues, any refunds on closed cards have made their way back to me eventually without having to do anything on my part. With ING since I had other accounts they just automatically deposited the refund in my transaction account. Other banks where I didn't have an account they sent me a cheque.
