Gas and Hot Water Billing – Separate or Together? (NSW)

Hi everyone, I'm living in an apartment with a centralized hot water system in NSW and just changed my gas retailer. In my first new gas bill, I noticed two "Step 1" usage entries. When I inquired with customer service, they explained that one is for gas, and the other is for hot water. However, in my previous retailer's bills, gas and hot water usage were bill together - converted to MJ, summed up, and then split into usage steps. There were no separate "Step 1" entries.

I'm curious to know if gas and hot water should be billed together or separately. Any insights would be appreciated. Thanks everyone.

    Who provides your hot water?

Perhaps gas is metered separately from hot water and your hot water is charged per L and your gas heating is charged per unit of gas burned.

  • Doesn't really make sense, how can they measure hot water and gas separately, if the gas is used to heat your water ?

I would question how this is possible.

  • Hmmm.. I've never encountered this sort of arrangement, but a bit of googling turned this up.

    Sounds like it's a thing.

  • There shouldn't be a difference in $, so does it really matter?

Yes, there is a difference. Two step 1 means the user will be paying double of step 1's higher rate.

No, that would depend on the contract rates for BHW. Step 1 for BHW would coincide with Standard Retail Contract.

@ElvisLa , the previous provider is correct. You should talk to your current provider and if they won't do anything just switch the provider. With two step 1, you will be paying double the step 1 rate, which is higher.

The correct one should be similar to this

Hot Water usage unit x pressure factor = Hot Water MJ
Gas usage unit x pressure factor = Gas MJ

Total MJ = Hot Water MJ + Gas MJ

    Total MJ - Step 1 rate = Balance 1
    Balance 2 - Step 2 rate …. etc…

    • Thanks a lot, mate! I have lodged a complaint. They only take a few extra bucks from my pocket, but they have thousands of customers.

      • If you chose a Retail plan for your gas, then the bill is correct. BHW will remain charged under Standard Retail Contract. I'm sure your retailer will explain it to you. Read the T&C's emailed to you when you signed up.

Thanks for pointing this out. I will check the T&C.
