Good ADSL2 provider?

Hey guys,

First time post! Just wondering about people's experiences/recommendations are for an adsl2 provider? Ive had enough of iinet after they refused to send out a technician until i located the source of the problem which was going to require me to take my modem to a mates house and try it there rather than send out a technician and diagnose and treat the problem as part of their service. Naked is preferred although not required, specifically has anyone had good experiences with dodo which is super cheap. Thanks for your time in advance:)

  • We're with internode and highly recommend them, we have a naked service but in hindsight should have gone with the basic telephone line as its the same price, it also helps internode if you have any problems on the line….oh you can even go on a monthly contract from the outset which is helpful if you rent or are not happy with the service.

  • Thanks stemcell, much appreciated:)

Internode is owned by iiNet now. BTW there are extensive forums on whirlpool.net.au about broadband providers.

  • On TPG. Wanted naked but it worked out cheaper for the plan I wanted with a phone line, I just don't plug a phone into the line. Currently pay $49.99 for 100gb/mo (50gb peak, 50gb off). No complaints so far.

  • I am happy to stay with Internode although it is more expensive than the other ISP.

Exetel hands down. Have been with them for 5 years now and have had no issues. Their VoIP pricing is cheap and they also do naked ADSL plus mobile phone plans.

I have even got my technically disabled parents connected to Exetel with their ADSL2 and VoIP.

Used to be with internode, but for the 1 year I was with them, I had a drop out at least once a week. They kept blaming dodgy lines in the house, but since I churned to Exetel, I have had no problems whatsoever.

Although one of the reasons Exetel is cheap, is because they have their helpdesk and offices now located overseas and they don't hide that fact either. So if you are new to the net or just totally useless with technology, Exetel might not be for you as they don't offer a 24/7 help desk.

Sorry but your post both gives no reason why anyone should choose Exetel and ADSL2 drop outs are often dependent on the SNR margin which can be changed.

You can easily still have dodgy lines in the house.

Funny that those dodgy lines haven't caused drop outs in the last 5 years as soon as I switched to Exetel. I have been using the same hardware all this time as well. Only changed laptops twice.

Anyway, I'm not saying OP HAS to go with Exetel. OP asked for an opinion on providers as he is looking for a good one preferably with naked ADSL and good pricing.

Reading this, I think to myself: "Hmmmmm yes….. Sounds like Exetel MIGHT be a company for the OP to look at"
So I replied and said that Exetel has been a great provider for the last 5 years.

My PERSONAL reasons why? Because of the 4 providers including Bogpond and Internode that I have used in the last 8 years, I have had the least (or none at all) issues with Exetel.
Also because their pricing is great and they offer lots of extra's as well.

The OP asks for an opinion, I give an opinion. He can take notice of it or ignore it. Doesn't matter to me :o)

However I agree with greenpossum. I found Exetel by using whirlpool.net.au after I submitted a similar post to the one OP submitted here. I had issues with Internode and received recommendations of different providers from whirlpool members. After contacting these providers and discussing plans and options, I decided to give Exetel a go.

          hahahah

Someone on whirlpool suggesting to go from Internode to Exetel because you are having issues? Keep dreaming.

Its not that recommending Exetel is a problem, its that you are doing it on incorrect information.

Keep dreaming? Are you ASSUMING that I am lying without evidence showing that I am truly lying???
It wasn't just one member either. It were a few people suggesting Exetel on Whirlpool :o\
Seriously….What on earth am I gaining by lying on this forum about Exetel being recommended to me?

I think you are taking things a little too personal. I am unsubscribing as I do not have the time to argue with people who do not know me and vice versa. Shakes head
          Have a great evening.

OP, it is MY own personal opinion that Exetel 'might' be a good company to consider. But it is also my opinion that you will get the best recommendation for your needs on sites like whirlpool and not on ozbargain.

          Goodluck.

        • I'm just pointing out that changing from Internode to Exetel to solve dropouts is suggesting that Exetel had anything to do with it, when they didn't do anything.

Exetel likely had a higher SNR margin by default or it was just pure luck that telstra repaired a network fault in your area.

  • If you value your sanity, forget DoDo. Anyone giving them a high rating, is associated with the business (sham).

I have used Internode and iiNet. Both good providers.

    • I haven't used DoDo myself, but when looking for a provider 5 years ago, I found out that they charge you a fair dinkum price for every GB you go over your usage limit. This was a big turn off for me. I rather be shaped. Though I know Dodo now does have a few unlimited plans.

I was also recently looking at changing electricity provider and Dodo came out cheapest for me. But upon researching the reviews, it seems their technical support as well as their customer service staff, were very hard to understand due to poor English skills.

      • Here's my personal experience with them:

        http://www.productreview.com.au/r/dodo-broadband-adsl/103588…

I signed up to the review site, just to warn others. I had read some bad reviews, but was trying hard to avoid Telstra at the time, and other providers did not have any free ports on my exchange.

When they refused me service, I waited for acout 45 days till Adam internet added additional ports to the exchange, and I signed up with them.

  • never go for TPG. the internet is up and down all the time. very bad services

  • Was with tpg years ago and for a long time- rubbish. Too congested at nights!

Dad is with spintel- Garbage! 0.1 to 0.2 on speedtest.

Optus, occasional drop outs. Really sucked for online games or streaming. 1-1.2mb/s on speedtest. Just over 2 years with them.

Switched to internode naked 60gb, download was twice as fast as optus. Dont recall having a drop out. DL was 2-2.4mb/s on speed test. 60gb isnt enough.

We moved and stayed with internode, switched to a 150gb contract for the same price. DL speed is 5x faster 11-12mb/s on speed test.

I looked at a few plans when we moved, wanted to try some of the "better value" plans like exetel. Mrs wanted to stay, so for the sake of the known, we stayed. Happy we did!

Internode now own iinet (or vise versa). In the world of ISP's, super cheap means super crap

Just go test your modem first, good opportunity to drink your makes grog!

  • I first used Telstra then Optus before switching to Dodo 7 years ago & haven't looked back. In that time I've only had one problem during an ADSL2 plan upgrade (as a result of my poor quality Telstra phone line & lack of exchange ports) & vented my displeasure on Whirlpool Forums.
In a matter of hours I received responses from no less than two Dodo Reps who politely & promptly resolved my issues within 24 hours.
In my experience Dodo has been No 1 for value & their service superior to what I received from my previous 2 providers.

  • I have been on telstra and they are ok.

Although they are a little more expensive than others and
i am paying about $88/m for 200G and home phone on a 24 mth contract.. they have never failed me.

I am also a light user and so far never exceed the 200g limit.

  • Exetel home phone $25/month. Pennytel ADSL2+ unlimited $20/month. Don't worry about pennytel - they use the AAPT infrastructure, which is in turn owned by IINET.

    Total: $45/month.
