Lenovo Legion Slim 5i AMD 14" Gen8 16GB Vs Apple MacBook 13" M2 Air 16GB

Which one would you get and why? Or maybe there's an even better option I haven't thought of?

Looking for an awesome laptop around $2000 that has best battery life and that you can learn to use to code. Both are around $2300 with 512gb, 16gb ram.

hmm i feel you are asking apple vs android questions? two different world not exchangeable you decide the os and then you get the answer we cant help without knowing which os you like.

    • I swing both ways, don't mind, i like both.

  • Lenovo
    16" Display
    16GB Ram
    512 GB Storage

    Apple
    13" Display
    8GB Ram
    256 GB Storage

I think you are comapring apples to …

    • The Apple is 13" yeah, but apart from screen size, spending 2300 on the Apple 16gb m2 256gb vs the lenovo intel chip 16gb. Same money, which one will perform better?

      • +2

But carrying 16 is like sky and earth vs 13 trust me you don't want to regret it you think yeah I'm strong blah but you will regret carrying 16 around 100%

        • Yeah they got a 14" weighing 2.5kg vs macbook 1.5kg

    • The legion comes in a smaller screen, similar price but 32gb. Ryzen chip. Basically all I'm asking is for the 2300 spent, which one will be the best all round, especially battery life and coding ability.

  • Should I get a Sherman tank or a hang glider?

    • Lol, it's just that they cost the same 2300 ish

      • Pretty dumb metric. If you need portable and good battery life a 16" screen gaming laptop is obviously going to be far inferior to the MacBook.

        • There's a 14" legion.

But suppose you right, the extra power for discrete gpu on the legion will kill battery faster, although, lenovo has a 73.6wh battery and mac has a 52wh, however, no one but Apple seems to have mastered power optimisation as good as the Mac. I had a gaming spec dell xps 15 and its terrible for battery life and gets really hot.

          • @grantster: You asked about the 16" legion

            • @brendanm: Yeah i know, i didnt see there was a 14" and i didn't want to repost. This has evolved a little, through the responses. No one really seems to know about the legion, probably just go for the mac in the end, seems to be more trusted. I guess if you into gaming, the legion would be better. Just looking for feedback as i go.

@grantster: At the end of the day a gaming laptop if for gaming, and if you aren't using it for that you are simply buying something that's heavy and has poor battery life.

                • +1

@brendanm: Agreed, just sometimes the gpu is good for some programming tasks but i think I'll avoid a gaming rig. Seems to be better programming options nowadays.

  • I'm thinking that the legion will definitely outperform the apple, but the legion is a gaming machine and while that is nice for coding to, i doubt the battery will last. I also like putting up a dual boot with Linux, much better for coding on Linux, but Mac Unix is already there. Mac is so far winning.

    • What coding are you doing exactly? Because macos being unix based does absolutely nothing for "coding" in linux, if you're writing linux apps then get something that can boot linux.

your posts are turning into word soup, what exactly are you trying to do here? You can't just learn every computer language, deciding what you want to do then picking a language would be a better start than picking a laptop. If you're just starting out you're a long ways off before the hardware will matter much.

      • Java coding, all i need is a jvm running, using Mac os at work at the moment and works great for Java, js, node, ai, python. Just from experience, jvm runs cooler in Unix like env

I'd just buy an m1 macbook air, more than enough and save $1,000

Sounds like you've made up your mind then.

Are you planning on using a separate display in addition to the laptop display? I find the 13" MacBook screen a little small to run the different windows I like to have open when coding. But I am a baby coder and my brain is small - maybe then you get a better handle on things it's easier with a small screen.

    • Yes, the 13" is small and when I'm home I'll totally be connecting one or two external monitors, even if i had 15" laptop screen, i prefer working on externals when I'm not mobile. The 13" and 14" of the legion 5 amd gen8 is great size for mobility, easy to connect external monitors to both yup.

Saw in the thread that you need it for Java programming. I'd recommend MacBooks with Apple Silicon.
For a better developer experience, the following factors matters (not applicable for gaming).

    Editor experience:
How responsive your code editor/IDE is largely depends on single- or lightly multi-threaded performance due to language server protocol implementation and the number of extensions (hooks) running. There is a noticeable difference in experience between code autocomplete popup in 50ms and 200ms (for larger projects this may bleed into the seconds mark, personal experience in JavaScript though). You don't want your tools interrupting your thought.

    Display:
Text legibility and screen brightness. Higher pixel density/brighter display make code and docs easier for your eyes. However, 13-inch is way too small for both docs website and code editor running at the same time. Consider 15-inch. Huge difference.

    Untethered performance, battery, and ergonomics:
AMD laptops may further limit power draw to conserve battery when unplugged. Also, some laptops draw air from the bottom, making it impossible to use in bed. In essence, if you choose AMD, then you're limited to sitting upright before the desk. MacBooks don't have this limitation. When you want to code, you can just flip it open and start, and its battery lasts ages.

M2 is 1.2x of Zen4's single-core performance. All-core performance only matters if you are transcoding video, rendering scenes, compiling large code projects where tasks can be easily parallelized, etc. For all other typical use cases, CPUs are only loaded with a few threads sporadically (I know this sounded like Userbenchmark favoring Intel at the time when Zen first came out). Like when you type in a few characters into the editor, your LSP, extensions, tests run for a few seconds, and that's it, some of the tasks even depend on previous task results so that won't be parallelized.

    • Very cool info cheers.

    Why not Yoga Slim?
    https://www.lenovo.com/au/en/p/laptops/yoga/yoga-slim-series/yoga-slim-7i-gen-9-(14-inch-intel)/83cvcto1wwau1

By the way, at your price point, won’t get a MacBook with support for dual external displays.

    • Looks promising, do you have a yoga? Keen to know how good the battery life is. The nacbook m2 air with 16gb is about 2300, but the yoga is cheaper. I'll def take a look thank you.

FYI M2 Air price drop occured today.

    • Woohoo thx, Apple got the best price, sometimes officeworks has even better prices, I'll check it out, much appreciated
