Hybrid Car Wait Times in Victoria

Hi all, I'm considering purchasing a hybrid car, specifically the Corolla sedan hybrid, but I've been informed that there's a one-year wait.

Have you purchased a hybrid car in Victoria, and if so, how long did you have to wait?

What car was it?

I was under the impression that ordering was back to normal, but it seems that's not the case.

Thank you

  • Second hand can be had within a week.

Yep but seem to be same price as new car

      • Beats waiting for a year if you need a car now. Older ones will be cheaper.

If you can get a 2020-22 model they are rated at 3.6L/100km where as the new ones are like 4.2L. Reason. Bigger and wider wheels.

          Reason. Bigger and wider wheels.

That's not the reason. The wheels are exactly the same. The reason is due to the 2018-2022 (not 2020) having a different hybrid system to the current one on sale.

@kerfuffle: How much research did you do?

            2024 spec sheet
16" allows across the range (bigger wheels is actually worse for fuel efficiency. The tires are 205 wide.

2020 on basic car it is 15" alloys with aero covers 195 wide

2024 is more kilowatts but same torque (142Nm).

The NEW hybrid system that uses more fuel?

            • -1

@netjock: I shall concede the point to you. The hybrid version has 15" wheels, however the petrol version had 16" wheels. My source: a hard copy of the Corolla catalogue with correct information as of August 2020.

I wouldn't recommend the 2020-2022 version though; the infotainment system and instrument cluster is quite dated-looking. Not to mention achieving 3.6L/100km is virtually impossible, as someone who has a hybrid Corolla sedan.

OP asking about the hybrid. Why are you looking at the petrol?

As someone who owns that car I am on 3.8L mostly city.

The newest model reviewers are getting closer to 4.5L - 5L.

It is an appliance. No body buys a Toyota to be at the cutting edge of car infotainment.

Hybrid i30 sedan instead? Cheaper, in stock

    • Did not know i30 came in Hybrid

      • +2

It just came out last month

I heard all Toyota hybrids there's a huge waitlist. Look at alternatives imo, or be really patient

One year sounds about right (I have the ZR hybrid sedan).

You probably wouldn't have to wait as long if you bought the hybrid hatch. Or a base-spec sedan.

  • Haval Jolion Hybrid or H6?
Zero wait times and arguably a better car.

  • Consider MG4/ BYD Dolphin or Atto, i30 hybrid as well if the corolla does not have satisfactory waiting times.

I am not so sure how reliable the i30 hybrid using DCT though

Hybrid Car Wait Times in Victoria

Are the Petrol/Diesel cars out yet?

  • You might also want to mention what trim level and colour you want.

It also depends on dealer apparently (maybe TMCA allocate a set number to each dealer, so if you can find out how many waiting to be delivered and allocation).

Also helps to be flexible so if any cancelled orders come up you might be able to get in fast.

Genius is you sign a contract and in 12 months time the price might have gone up another 10%

    • I may ring a round to see if any available then.
If I sign a contract wait 12 months do I still have to pay for the higher price its not locked in ?

      • Yes it is open ended $ wise.

You might want a clause in there that you can get out without penalty if they don't delivery say in 12 months at an agreed price.

At least if another option turns up you can get out.

  • Buying a new toyota is like buying a brand new 10 year old car. Corolla doesnt have any comfort or convenience for rear seat passengers (air vents, USB ports).

Corolla doesnt have any comfort or convenience for rear seat passengers (air vents, USB ports).

Well if you get the base-spec car, that's what you get. Want those features? Buy the top-spec one.

    • What Hybrid car you recommend then ?

    • It is an car equivalent of aldi appliance.

Although it is turning out to be an expensive one given the new prices.

  • Honda’s Hybrids are just as good.Wait times are around 3 months or less.

    • If want the Civic hybrid which costs a good $10K-$15K more than the Corolla hybrid, sure. Also wait time is a lot longer than three months for the Civic hybrid; Car Expert stated May 2024 from an article they had written in October 2023.

      • I contacted my local dealer and they said you could have a civic ehev in a week if I wanted it in white! plus go on carsales you can already find second hand ehev for cheaper then the rrp although not by much

  • Their SUV range is around the 3 month mark, Civic Hybrid, yes longer due to its popularity.Quite frankly I would take the Civic over the Corolla any day of the week, irrespective of the price, Corolla is starting to show its age & is getting a bit long in the tooth. Its not worth the wait of nearly twelve months, so much better vehicles out there now days.

    • OP wants a sedan, not a SUV.

      • Is that not what a Civic is? Hardly a SUV is it?

        • A Civic is a hatchback. You're the one who said their hybrids had a three month wait time, which is not the case for the Civic hybrid (the closest car to the OP's first choice of the Corolla)

          • -1

@kerfuffle: As I alluded to, Civic wait times were long( source: Honda Australia) they have now come down quite a bit.Certainly not looking @ nearly twelve months like Toyota. Now your splitting hairs, it is for all intentions a car.

            • @Hackney: yer cause no one is paying 55k for a civic hybrid

              • @dkwon10: Actually, a lot of people, hence the long wait time. I can see why (I probably would have gotten one if it was available at the time I ordered my car). The $47K petrol Civic on the other hand has no wait time and isn't worth the money

              • @dkwon10: @dkwon10,actually they are.

                • @Hackney: interesting i have only ever seen 1 or maybe 2 11th gen civic on the road in Brisbane, and it was the petrol, not the hybrid
