Recommended Me Handheld Retro Console

looking to purchase some handheld well JB hifi was useless when i went to look at a switch. So thought bugger it i may as well go retro.

will likely play
SNES and PS1 maybe PSP
then some classics such as mario karts and super smash bros.

Really want Plex and youtube on it

Nothing crazy

Im leaning towards retroid 4 pro

But if there is another option maybee with a bigger screen im all ears.

Might occasionally hook it up to a USB C monitor i have is to just to kill time when im away working.

    • AYN Odin 2, but it's ~double the price of the RP4
    • Steam Deck
    • ASUS ROG Ally
    • Lenovo Legion Go

retroid 4 pro Is a cutie and honestly I cannot wait to see what this market is like in next 12 months even

  • Retroid probably fits best.

Steam Deck base model would also be decent depending on budget but it is a bigger device and kind of in a different category.

You could consider a phone + controller as well.

  • I bought a gamesir G8 a motorola edge 30 fusion and it's pretty good. Was about $400 all up, biggest downside is the width of the screen (most games aren't designed for 20:9).

But I've been playing gamecube games on it and having a blast. Also works well with moonlight/sunshine for streaming from my PC, I've been playing Tiny Tina's Wonderland quite a bit lately on it (helpful that the wifi router is nearby though).

  • Phone for plex/YT plus a New 3DS XL and hack it to play everything retro up to a PS1?

      samsung zfold5
can do all you mentioned plus switch !
      and.. tiktok aswell! amazing, right

      • Looks nice but aren't the Zfold5 around $2500? I guess if that's your phone and can do all that already you only need to have a controller to make it work, but I wouldn't be able to justify that expensive a phone myself, when you could get a legion go for half the price and still get a nice enough phone with the leftover $1250!

Would make a pretty good emulator phone though!

Here we are at ozb we never pay full price….

  • Nokia 3210 with Snake.

  • An android phone might tick all the boxes. An iPhone can too but you jump through hoops to get it running.

I just ordered an Analogue Pocket after looking for something like it for probably 20 years now. $600 with dock and it'll barely run SNES games, will never run PSX, let alone Plex or YouTube. And something better will probably come along four years from now, but YOLO.

There are a few dedicated handhelds that are very highly regarded now, China is pumping these things out like crazy. You might be better off looking at one of them, and maybe get a small tablet for your Plex and YouTube needs.

  • If you have an Android phone, you already have an amazing emulator, just buy a Backbone One to play them on!

Otherwise, I'd suggest checking out Retro Game Corps on YT, watch his videos and make your choice from there =)

  • Steam Deck is the best value.
    Emulate up to PS3!
    Play thousands of PC games.
    Can be docked.

Really want Plex and youtube on it

    Android phone/tablet with controller attachment.

  • PS Vita supports "no pay station" for all you VITA, PS1 and PSP games

  • Nintendo Switch

    Hit up the reddit forums
There is some crazy spreadsheet with every model and the platforms and rating how they perform

I’ve got an Rg353v and love it, small
Probably didn’t need dual sticks tho and don’t really use them/or one at all
