Roamless a Better Option for 4G Usage of < 10GB/Year in Data?

I use less than 10GB per annum on an infrequently used iPad.

Before Roamless, the cheapest plan I can find that will accomodate that usage is through Aldi Mobile at $95/year for 30GB. Prior to that, Amaysim had $60 for 60GB for a 365 day SIM which was significantly upvoted here (https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/776176).

Roamless (https://roamless.com/) claims credit never expires, and its charges for AU data are $2.86USD/GB. That's $43 AUD per annum for 10 GB, with no ridiculous expiry terms imposed. Even better, it'll work on both Telstra and Optus in Australia according to the rep (https://www.ozbargain.com.au/comment/14964403/redir)

Am I missing something? This seems to beat all Australian prepaid SIMs (and every eSIM for roaming data I've found) for infrequent, low-data usage.

Roamless is an eSIM so make sure your iPad supports one.

I suppose you could always try Roamless and cancel it if you find it doesn't work for your needs.

    • That’s where I landed. It looks like it warrants posting as a deal.

      • I have had issues porting from eSIMs on iPads since they can't receive the SMS when porting the number out but sounds like that won't affect you since you just want the data rather than keeping a number.

Another option depending on your usage is you could always get the promo Boost, etc one month sim promos when you need extra date for a month or so.

Would be interested in hearing how your Roamless experience goes.

There's some data around from 2023 that suggests the average Australian on a prepaid plan uses 6.3GB per month. I agree your use-case (data only, 10GB per 365d) demands an unconventional solution but there would be hardly any other customers in the same boat.

  • Flip has $4/Month with 500Mb/month. Keep in mind that's only 6GB total per year.

Alternatively, if you can wait, this may be an option if you have an eSim-compatible iPad

Edit: Dodo $10/Month with 2GB. No excess data charges, a bit more than the Aldi plan but you basically have 'unlimted' data

Sounds fine, but I would keep my balance low expecting them to change terms.
Those prices are below sustainable in Australia, and I expect they will change the pricing once they have acquired some more customers or at least raise prices for the Australian roaming.

If they were prepared to honour this pricing for several years many, many embedded device and SCADA operators would switch to them.

Try checking https://esimdb.com/australia . There's esim deals for Australia for as low as US$1 for 1Gb per month.

  • No you are not missing anything here and you are not alone, and it's a great deal!
I used 6gb of mobile data in 5 months, most of my data usage is on a wifi network at home or overseas. I didn't even think I was data savvy.
Surprised to hear that the national average is 10x that - but then again maybe not surprised.

Bonus is that you can switch from automatic network selection to force Telstra network. I have this e-sim as a "plan b" for roaming within Australian remote areas (primary is Optus).
My phone switches to the secondary e-sim automatically when Optus runs out and telstra network is available. Spotify and Waze keep chugging more on carplay now.

Bonus 2 is that you can also force 3G on newer iphones with this e-sim, which can make remote regional connection much more reliable as well.

    A lot to love here!
