NBN Authentication Issues

Ok so I'm currently on a NBN HFC connection which uses PPPoE. Every few days I'm getting a dropout on my connection where it fails to authenticate. To fix I have to either:

  • Wait for it to start working again which can take a more than a day
  • Directly connect the NTD to my laptop which bypasses the router (TP-Link AX73)
  • Reset the NTD

The dropouts only started to occur about 3 weeks ago so I'm not sure what's causing it.
I've called tech support and they were supposed to send out a technician which they haven't as the dropouts are intermittent. Sometimes even when I try the above it doesn't work and have to wait for a few days to get it working again.

Anyone know what can be the issue? Is it a known issue on HFC?

  • Try a different router.
Such as a NetComm one as sometimes the older TP-link routers don't work with the NBN correctly as they don't support VDSL or the more modern technology.

  • Try rebooting the NBN NTD get a pen and move the NTD slightly so you can hold down the reset button on the back of the NTD for around 30 seconds.
    This should fix the issue.
Your router looks fine in terms of specs.

  • Cheap crappy RSPs are cheap crappy RSPs ;)

  • +1

Was this the first time you have called your RSP? If not what is the history of this issue?

    • Upgrade your router’s firmware
    • A/B test with another router
    • Call your ISP while there are issues to let them run diagnostics
    • Borrow another NTD to test

Why are you connecting the laptop? Can’t you just power cycle the HFC NTD?

  • maybe disconnect your line and use mobile data for nbn to come out quicker.
    may need a connector replaced

  • Had kinda similar issue.Drop outs on VPN connection that were quite frequent but for just 3 to 5 mins and not like yours. Was with superloop and it was hard to convince them for a NBN Tech visit as they said it looks like only authentication drop outs and nothing wrong with connection, raised many tickets .They made me hell lot of isolation tests , asked to change cable, router was changed thrice upon their request just to make them agree that there was nothing wrong with routers.Had TP-LINK(old VR1600v, new AX73) and
another ASUS (AX57)but no use. Returned the TP LINK and kept ASUS later anyhow. Had doubts on NTD as well, as when there was no internet i.e. during drop outs all 4 lights were solid.Moved to More and had the complaint raised straight away and they confirmed drop outs. The NBN tech found connector on the external wall had some issue and after replacement everything has been worked fine.
