Cheapish RC Car for 7yo - Amazon Toy or Hobby Level?

My son turns 7 soon and has been asking for an RC car. I'm not sure whether to get a 'toy' from Amazon or something that can be repaired and upgraded.

It would be used mostly on concrete, jumps at a skate park, etc. The ability to go on grass would be good. My budget is $200.

I've been considering a DEERC 9206E on Amazon ($150). It's 1/10 scale, so nice and big. It's also fairly slow, which is probably better for a beginner.

I've also been looking at the MJX Hyper Go 16208 ($169 with ebay plus). This is still entry level but it's brushless and parts are readily available. It's 1/16 scale, though, so it might be prone to flipping and I'm not sure how it would go on grass.

Does anyone have experience with the cheaper Amazon RCs? I'd probably rather get the MJX but are the 1/16 trucks a bit unwieldy?

    If your son is good with toys and doesn’t get bored easily then what you suggested might make sense.
    Else get some Lego technic kits

    Do they make ones with little cameras on them so he can see where he goes, like a drone has?

    my 4yo have the previous version of that same deerc
    it is not slow
    it is fun.

      I probably should have said 'slower'. I see that as a good thing, he'd struggle with a faster car.

      How is your experience with the deerc?

        mines the 2-engine model with lights.
        it's fast
        it doenst like water.
        theres more weight at the back so steering is light esp when going fast.

        one of the batteries died.
        i wish i had a 3d printer to print a new shell for it, one that puts the batteries more forward.

      Second this comment. Wltoys 144001 is a fantastic entry level car. Easily upgradable if you wish, plenty of spares. From memory comes in a brushed or brushless motor

        I was also considering the Wltoys 124008, which looks similar. Good to know parts are available.

    Is you son a fan of monster trucks?

    We got this for our kid for Christmas, runs on gravel, water, dirt and tallish grass.

      He loves megalodons and would no doubt love this. I'm after something that can take a bit of a beating off road though, so in not sure how long that one would last.

    I got my nephew a Maverick Atom, its smaller but still a heck of a lot of fun. I feel like its a fantastic starter RC even if the adults still hogged it :P

    I bought the MJX 14210 from AliExpress just before Christmas & got it for $190. It’s an excellent beast & I’ll keep recommending an MJX 14 or 16-series every day of the week.

    The 16-series MJX cars are about the same size as the 14-series, and also amazing. They all come with wheelie bars and some spare parts (should you break it somehow) and a 2S battery. Totally ready to go (just charge it before you give it to him! The USB charger will take a few hours).

    They’ll take skate parks all day long and will fang through grass and off road no worries (though due to size will struggle with tall/tough grass).

    My 5yo - who is pretty gentle on toys as far as boys go - can race our 14210 over smalls jumps at home or in our culdesac and thru the grass in the spare block down the road no worries. He’s cartwheeled it across the street a few times accidentally and it’s brushed it off no worries. Never broken a thing.

    Plenty of parts availability on both Amazon & AliExpress. AE is cheaper, but slower (usually ~10 days to regional QLD for me). Amazon is more expensive, but supposedly faster shipping.

    Go the MJX, you’ll he’ll love it.
