How Do Demerit Points Work in NSW?

In the last 12 months I remember hearing on the news that safe drivers will be issued with bonus "merit' points for safe driving.

I logged in via the Service NSW site, to see if I had been awarded any of these points (I had not).

Anyone hear what is happening with this? I know I didn't dream it :)

    What like this?

Says safe drivers can have a point scrubbed in 1 year of good behaviour rather than 3 years

Whats the point of this program? The point system was to get bad drivers off the road. So all this does is reward bad drivers by making the points disappear faster so they can continue being a bad driver🤦

demerit points - if you are good, you want less of. You don’t want to be “awarded” for being good. No such thing as merit points, just reducing the demerits

If you don't commit any more offences, they'll take one off the number of demerit points you have rather than requiring it to expire after 3 years.

So they aren't rewarding safe drivers, ones who don't have any demerit points, they are rewarding unsafe drivers, ones who do have demerit points. They're just not rewarding ones who are really unsafe, the ones who not only have demerit points, they've added more.

    • Came here to say something similar to this… they are rewarding bad drivers. Good drivers have no need for “extra” demerit point space if they don’t even use any of the 12 or 13 they are already allocated.

But! In saying that, if you are a safe driver, when you go to get your license renewed, if you have had no offended or demerit points in the last 10 years, the cost of your renewal is halved. So good drivers do receive a reward.

      • if you have had no offended or demerit points in the last 10 years, the cost of your renewal is halved

Last five years, and this is no longer a thing as of February 18.

  • OP did not indicate when and how many point lost for breaking the law.

    • They're not required to divulge their driving history to you, Mr GTS.
