As far as I know you can still tap off at Sydney Airport with a negative, does anyone know what the latest threshold is ? I have not exit at Sydney airport for long time and I think I can still tap off with -4/5 last time.

I was going to come in and say that this is a privately owned company rah rah rah but apparently 85% of the ticket fee goes to the state government.

If you are travelling as a group, its generally cheaper to just share an uber/taxi. The airport access fee is like over $20 or something? Its been a while since I travelled and the last time was for a business trip, so work paid for the uber to the airport.
They have closed this loophole ages ago. There's a teller window, at the exit, so if you don't have enough balance, it will prevent you from exiting, then you go go to that window and the helpful staff will help you top up your card.
I haven't been to the airport for a while, but I presume they must have put some self serve Opal card top up machines there by now.
TLDR: You cannot exit Sydney airport station if the charge creates a negative balance.

They have installed Opal card machines inside the gates. So if you tap and it's negative, they direct you to the Opal card machines to correct the negative balance.
If that's too expensive for you, get off at Mascot and walk it (or catch the bus)

Just jump off at Mascot & catch the bus or walk to Domestic terminal & catch free bus.
I did this once, rather spend the extra $15 or whatever it is to get to the airport via train which is 2 stops to international or 1 stop to domestic and save time as a solo traveller from central station.
I remember: walking 5 mins to get to the bus station, waiting 20 minutes for the bus, getting there was like what 10 mins to international?
But I do see the savings if you're a group or family.
