Car Insurance - Claims Last 3 Years to The Month?

Does anyone know the definition of the typical question when getting a car insurance quote, "claims in the last 3 years". Would that be per calendar year, or literally last 3 years to the month. eg. had a claim in Feb 21, now it is March 24, therefore no claims in the last 3 years? Or would the last 3 years be 21/22/23?

Yes, no claims in the last 3 years. Congrats you will be saving 40$ annually or 4$ per month.

Numerals come after the $ sign.

        . Ok noted

      • "Dollars thirty," just doesn't sound right, "thirty dollars" sounds better

      • In Australia, US and UK!
In fact almost everywhere except Europe

Time is 1:59pm. You ask someone to call you back in one hour.

That person calls you one minute later.

What do you think is the right answer?

    • 2.59pm… what is your point?

      • Critical thinking.

So you've correctly calculated that now plus one hour is not 2:00pm.

If today was 1/1/2024, what dates does 'in the last year' cover?
If today was 31/12/2023, what does does 'in the last year' cover?

Reading your example again, if you had a claim yesterday, do you think they'd be interested in it? Because your option of '21/22/23' would seem to exclude you from disclosing the most relevant item they're asking for.

        • Fair enough… just that I am cutting it fine, the claim was made in late Feb 21 so the 3 years only scrapes in by days if i were to renew the policy today.

          • @beemr: Couldn't find any legal definitions for it, so you're better off asking the insurer.

However, common sense says that you're in the clear. In fact, since it's now March, if I put in Feb 21, it tells me 'enter a date in the last three years' with AAMI.

My premium was $200-300 more when answering 'yes' to this question, although ultimately don't want to answer incorrectly and have a future claim denied.

So it's definitely 'last 3 years' to the day you made a previous claim?

    • You never thought to ask the insurance company ?

    • I work in the industry. Can confirm it’s definitely in the last 3 year period (to the day), not calendar year.

  • you have had 3 years of car insurnace where u havent made a claims
    i.e
between mar 21 and mar 22
between mar 22 and mar 23
between mar 23 and mar 24

since the feb 21 claim was for the mar 20 to mar 21 premium period, i would say u can say you havent had a claim in the last 3 years.

    if the above is accurate

I think you're overthinking it. Common sense would dictate it was in the 3 years prior to the date you nominate as your policy start date, not the calendar year.

Im going to answer truthfully as at the date of the question.

It may be worth my while to not take insurance at 2y 10months since previous claim. Continue a previous policy, then cancel it and take out a new policy but definitely not drive without insurance.

  • 3 years = 3 x 12 months = 36 months
    So last 36 months or 1/3/24- 3 years = 1/3/21 (including 1st).
