Home & Contents Insurance - Non Monitored Alarm

Hi all,

Every year I tick that our property has an alarm (we do and it's non-monitored) to get some sort of discount on Home/Contents Insurance policy. However, we don't always use it.

I'm wondering if there was a robbery, would an insurance company deny a claim if the alarm system was not active at the time. Maybe someone in the insurance industry can provide insight or perhaps you've unfortunately been in this situation?

Cheers

same situation as you OP which is why i tick no alarm just to prevent any chance of denying my claim

  • With some companies https://www-cdn.rac.com.au/-/media/files/rac-website/home-an… you get a discount for non monitored, higher for monitored and highest for monitored by them.

    Ask your insurer.

did you actually verify with them if it does actually give an actual discount?

just wondering now with more and more brazen (and often even broad daylight) break-ins if an alarm system adds any meaningful protection/ and or is a deterrent.
example: this group of 3 kids are seen on security cameras giving 0 forks and in no hurry to run away even with the alarms going off

No reason for them to be worried, their parents don't give a shit, all that happens is they get a ride in a cop told, told they are very naughty, then back on the street.

      • Maybe not the place to discuss but something needs to be done about meaningful punishment

Neighbourhood watch giving them a hiding and dropping them off 100km inland to walk home.

Yes, No or Maybe. They could deny your claim if they really wanted to shitty about it, honestly I doubt they would, but not a risk I would take.

Have you tried to compare prices with and without an alarm? If its like $50/year, then don't risk it and say you don't have one.

No point in paying money if you end up not being covered!

  • I'm wondering if there was a robbery…

Wait, I think you mean Burglary

Robbery is generally when someone takes something of value directly from another person by the use of force or fear.

Burglary involves a person illegally entering a building in order to commit a crime while inside.

If you (or someone in your house) was robbed, they could call the Police (and provide a description).

  • What is your insurer like? Some will cover your contents that are unlocked and outside, some will cover stuff if you've left doors unlocked etc. IMO its only the 'budget' insurers thst would deny a claim if youve got an alarm, use it most of the time and forgot when broken into. It may also depend on the area you live in.
