Site Notifications Should Be Deal-Centric

Hey bargainers, first time poster. Looking for a discussion about the deal notifications UI opened by hovering on the site's bell icon on the header bar and the /notifications page.

Surely the notifications should be deal-centric and not user-centric. By that I mean the notifications should not really concern "who" uploaded the deal and their user image. That can be found inside the deal. I suggest the notifications UI should be deal-centric and include an image of the deal or promote the store name for easier scanning by eye. The product & store determines if I click on the deal, so that should be more prominent. Perhaps there is a good reason users are promoted, maybe some people only click on deals by certain users :P Let me know as I'm new to the OzB as a community. I technically subscribed to a store or particular tag, not an individual.

The text of the deal is quite cluttered, so the store name is placed at the end of the deal text. I like that its bold.

I like the "mark as read" buttons though, they feel great to click with instant response.

What are your thoughts? Alternatively, how do you optimize your notifications, any particular tips?

  • Notification on OzBargain is a lot more than just deal notification. Other than notifying the user about the store / product / brand / search that one subscribes to, you also receive notifications on

    • Someone commented on your post or replied on your comments
    • Someone tags you in the comment
    • Private messages
    • Your referrals were expired / removed
    • Your votes got revoked
    • Receiving new badges
    • Delivery error on your email address
    • and more…

So we can't have just a "deal centric" view on the notification, and have to simplified it to just sender & messages.

We are also moving away from using HTML in the message itself, as the details are lost when passed onto other notification systems (Firebase Cloud Message, Telegram, browser notification integrating with the operating system, etc).
