HP Elitedesk G6 Mini - Windows 11 Hangs at Shutdown

I'm hoping one of you genius wizards can help me.

Transplated the SSD from a G2 mini to a G6 mini, re-activated Windows, updated BIOS, updated all drivers, removed all obsolete drivers. Everything tested and working.

The only issue I have now however is that the PC hangs at shutdown, it gets to the part in the sequence where explorer is terminated and display is cut off from input, and right when you're next expect it to power off it hangs.

It'll stay that way indefinitely, and after a while the fan will ramp up as if under load.

SFC finds no errors, no virus/malware, Event View logs nothing between time of shutdown and time of next login (no Error not even Warning, just the usual Information entries) under Application/System.

Long story but I can't freshly reinstall W11. What else can I possibly try? eelp!

    Thats a shame.

I’d try turning off Fast startup.

    Otherwise, some other ideas:

    • Reset bios
    • Check bios settings related to shutdown/sleep
    • Get a second drive and try a clean install
    • Ensure other drivers are up to date
    • I did turn off hibernation originally and now fast start in bios, however that didn't fix the issue.

When you say reset bios, do you mean just reset to default with the new bios version, or to downgrade to an earlier version (if feasible)?

      • Did you turn off fast startup in Windows?

I would enable verbose messages in windows, and see what the last process is before the screen goes out. It may give you a lead to chase further.

        What about a system reset?

        • Yeah fast startup is turned off.

I have indeed forgotten about verbose msgs, thanks for that I'll try and see if anything obvious comes up.

Can't reset/reinstall unfrotunately, I have an outdated proprietary software that's not publically available, the created files are not backwards compatiable with the updated version, and due to certain obscure security issues the publisher has refused to set me the installer. I've tried to manually migrate the program (user data/etc) alas it didn't work.

  • freshly reinstall W11

    • There's 101 post which you can reply to since you lack the capacity to read nor possess any technical know how. Enjoy the rest of your sunday.

      • Well without stating what the proprietary software and version is you're not going to get a legit answer from anyone on the internet. Cheers!

  • Another reason not to get w11.
