Is Twitter/X Better Than Before?

Hi fellow OzBargainers,

For those who frequently uses Twitter (or X), do you find it is a better social media platform now after Elon took over?

If yes/no/same, how so? Genuinely curious to know what the general public think of it.

Cheers.

Its no better but thats nothing to do with Elon. Twitter became an echo chamber long ago and ceased serving any real purpose outside the US. Waste of time in Australia.

  • +4

I used to have a twitter account and now I don't.
Nothing about being a echo chamber of the left or right but allowing people to sell "miracle cure tablets at $100USD a week to cure everything" (as long as you take it for the rest of your life). Account was unbanned by Elon and because it's subscribed to twitter/X blue it's now untouchable. If that account wasn't unbanned id still likely be there. The fraudster account said maybe it was "about time all the other sites that banned them (which is pretty much everywhere) should unban them too."

    • IMO the contents on Twitter, especially the ones relating to politics are more extreme than ever, on either Left or Right.

The so called “restoring freedom of speech” did more harm than good and it’s an unhealthy environment.

      • +3

it was never about restoring freedom of speech.

Elon doesn't care about free speech, he cares about himself.

    For me it feels worse?
I don't know if its always the case, but I could see the original tweet before without logging in, but now you are forced to (so I just don't look at the tweet anymore).
Also I' constantly getting "follows" by scam accounts, no idea why but only started after this, I feel maybe there used to be more moderation before?
I also seem to get more "political" content, no idea if thats just somehow based on history, but I usually try to stay away from it so I hate it.

Nope, still sucks, just like everything that Elon touches.

Why can't he fix Twitter? I mean, it's not rocket science.

  • +1

It's had some very marginal improvements that would have come by now anyway, so it is marginally better. It probably would have been even better still without Elon.

Apparently Elon bought it to turn it into an Asian style "everything app", but unless Elon plans on living forever then I don't see how he's going to achieve it at this pace.

  • Twitter? Never heard of it.

It is now called SEX without the S and the E!

  • +2

It was barely okay, now it's shit. And that started before elon took over. He sure as heck didn't make it any better.

  • +2

I find the comments/replies to be frustrating. Full of spam now and no chance of engagement which is what I thought the app was all about.

Content is still very good for what I use it for

There are three things that really irked me:

    • The removal of headlines from articles - even though they (kind of) returned I liked them as they were before
    • Paid subscribers to the top means that good replies can be tens or hundreds of posts down in a thread
    • Ad revenue sharing is causing meme posts to appear in inappropriate places where they have no relevance

Also I didn't care for MrBeast on other platforms and I don't care for him on Twitter either.

    • Agree - Paid subscribers to the top is one of the most annoying things for me. Most people who will pay for it are the ones who want to support Elon therefore the comments section usually looks biased.

I use X to follow discussions on international news events, but now it's inundated with crap, probably from troll farms trying to infect western opinion/politics … stuff X could and should be removing. It's killing engagement. Like so many others, I'm waiting for one of the alternatives to gain enough momentum, then I'll dump X

Twitter the question isnt about opinion it is about 'profit' in the 8 years twitter was public it made a profit 2 of the 8 years

X is now a private company but under the previous lunatics the company was unsustainable

seems Musk has made the numbers work and credit needs to be given where it is due

    • -1

Twitter made a half billion dollar profit the quarter before Musk took over, I don’t know how you don’t think that’s sustainable.

It’s not clear that Musk has made the numbers work either. The only numbers we have are that the valuation has tanked and tonnes of advertisers left.

Anyway, on topic, I left Twitter because there was a run of stability issues, a lot more weird posts showing up in my feed and changes that didn’t seem to serve a purpose. I cut back on my social media in general though and am much happier for it.

    • Many major sponsors have pulled out advertising with Twitter/X recently. Most content creators are also not a fan of revenue sharing on the platform while Elon constantly ask them to post on it.

How do you know the numbers work now it’s a private company?

got some triggered lefties - the answer is simply i dont but they didnt work prior so they needed a change Elon wont run out of money i got more confidence he is/will get it right he has a track record of success

factually speaking it wasnt working before so a change where it might be working is a 'good thing' im not a fan of any of the paid stuff but it makes X far more sustainable and less at the mercy of sponsors thus i would say it has been a change for the better - A lot of people pay for there X account now that free rode it before, similar to youtube which people pay to get promoted

        • +2

          got some triggered lefties

Time to head to truthsocial then.

You don't know the numbers prior and you don't know them now. But you're confident he is/will be making it better? Right.

    • I guess you also think Elon created Tesla and PayPal.

I jumped back on X after Elon bought it and now visit it daily after barely using it at all in the past.
Took at while to curate the right people/accounts to follow, mute the annoying ones and block the crap recommended ones and my feed is very enjoyable and informative.

I know a lot of people don't like it but it is refreshing to see and hear clearly unfiltered content that you would not see on other platforms. Even if you disagree with it, you can be confident you are getting all sides and not just what a group of people what you to see.

It's insane to see the coverage on X of things like protests and crimes that are happening around the world that don't get a peep in the news or other platforms and yet other protests or crimes that are of a far less severity get a tonne of airtime outside of X.

    • Interesting. I agree that you see a lot of contents now which you wouldn't see prior to Elon took over. But my personal experience is there's a lot more bots/trolls accounts and also a lot more misinformation which Community Notes may or may not pick up.

      • Hence the curation. It took me months and I'm still working on it. Finding actual humans that post regularly and good content.
Then just keep expanding and trying out new accounts.
It's fairly easy to see who is human and who is just posting garbage if you are looking for it.

    • -3

Yea, some people enjoy clickbait, outrage and victimhood, even the fake stuff out of troll factories. I don't, Elon ruined X by chasing cheap $$$, and it's value decline reflects that

    • If you curate your feed, would you still call it informative? I'd call it affirmative. You're unlikely to see a different view point from your own?

      Genuine question.

      • +1

Really good point. I guess I'm old enough and think I'm well versed enough to know what I think is right and how to detect bs.
It probably is an echo chamber for me but apart from ozb it's really the only other website I visit and I don't really spend much time on it.
I've got a decent social circle with a wide range of beliefs, views and opinions. I'd rather be challenged by them and learn than from some online comments!
X helps me stay sharp to articulate what I believe to be right and provide relevant examples and analogies.
