Looking for USB Soundcards

Hey OzB, I'm looking to purchase a good external usb soundcard for my current laptop so I dont have to use my crappy onboard sound. I want to use it for DJ'ing as well. I've scouted out this one which is probably max on what Im willing to spend: http://www.pccasegear.com/index.php?main_page=product_info&c…

What should I look for when purchasing one?

Thanks

  • Does your laptop have HDMI or digital audio out? If so I would suggest using that, or a USB device with digital output, assuming your DJ equipment will accept the digital source. For many sources this makes the loss practically 0, and what device you have irrelevant.

If you have to have analogue out, then you'll need to research a device with a good response, but I personally think it is better to offload this to a good amp.

  • +1

FiiO E17, it's very affordable, very portable and sounds excellent for the price.

  • I have 2 Behringer UCA-222 for my home studio and they work a treat.
You can get them for less than $50 (I got mine here: https://www.storedj.com.au/products/BEH-UCA222)

    • This one actually looks quite good, is this the cheapest price going around?

      • It was a few months ago when I got mine, not even eBay was this cheap!

  • I use one of these -

    it's good.

    • I was looking for a cheap one off ebay but im concerned that the sound quality will not be as good as say a $50 card…

      • for $1.60 just take the Ozbargainers risk.

seriously, I'm using one of these at the moment to listen to music.

        it's good.

I use it to plug my hackintosh into my my amp.

      • double post.

      • Digital. Output. If you are using an analogue signal from this, I am sure it will suck. Anything digital should be just fine, but then so should the on board one.

        • I have a USB dongle with digital out (optical in the 3.5mm socket) but cannot see any on ebay now, just the larger external boxes.
          Anybody seen one?
