Taylor Swift - Cultural Phenomenon, or over-Hyped Media Creation?

Is the "swiftie" adulation a result of talent, or something else?

In recent times she has thrown the RWNJ's in the USA into a frenzy, merely by suggesting eligible voters should register, and then vote.

More recently, the dopey Australian media has creamed its collective jeans over her arrival; the later arrival of her squeeze; her stepping out for fish and chips; her packed out "performances"; and finally her departure from our shores.

But now we have the current ASEAN meeting in Oz, thrown into an almighty tizzy by the fact that Singapore has signed her up for exclusive performances in the island state, much to the disdain of other regional leaders.

FFS!

  • taylor swift is not great looking

  • She's a global pop icon and was here for 2 weekends. No different to any other major act coming here, the difference was the media knew it got attention & clicks so they put out 60 articles a day on Taylors plane and Taylors breakfast and Taylor spotted and Taylor whatever. No one actually cares about her that much except for the media and the most hardcore fans.

It was a few days, lots of people got to have a really significant experience at an enormous once in a lifetime concert and now it's done. Kinda like the Olympics.

Meanwhile, Australia's obsession with sports and NRL goes multiple days a week for 9+ months of a year, is so much worse than T Swift fever (you can even get a commemorative birth certificate of your footy team) & no-one bats an eye

  • I really shouldn't be surprised by the amount of boomer comments on here. But yet I still am.

  • Thank god she's gone out of Australia. For 7 months, the radio in Sydney kept hyping her up and playing swift songs every 3rd song. 2 months to her arrival, radio kept playing her songs and trying to give out tickets. It was so damn annoying..

While she's a superstar, I'm not a fan but good for those who like her.

But you can't compare her to MJ, Beatles etc…. different times and different methods of reaching an audience.

IMO based on reach, I think MJ had a bigger impact than Taylor. If Taylor didn't have social media, who knows where she would be on the fame scale.

I also think Taylor is at her peak now. She will never recreate the eras tour hype and craze.

It's like Marvel's end game, all the work and effort that lead to end game was worth it and that was the peak of marvel satisfaction (in my opinion). The eras tour was Taylor's 'end game'. Don't think Taylor can surpass that.

  • +1

I love living in my cave. Someone at work was talking about Tay Tay and I had nfi who they were talking about.

  • Taylor Swift is the greatest. We should put her on one of our banknotes, at the very least.

  • She is a useful pawn for bread and circus purpose.
