Land Tax Canberra Question

Anyone in Canberra know how the revenue office finds out if you are not an owner occupier?

The only thing I can think of is a bond lodgement to the same office.

I moved out briefly a few years ago with a GF and quickly became apparent it wasn't going to work and moved back so moved back. Cost a fortune.
Think I have grounds to stand on to miss land tax for that quarter?

Initially, I thought it was Goldfish, but that isn't illegal in Canberra…

  • Could also be my Tax form which had a different address for that year I just realised but its state vs Fed department

  • Is it full year's land tax or pro-rated to just the period rented out in the year (e.g. 6 months is 50% of annual amount).

    • I dont know It doesnt actually say it says from the date 2020 - now
I assume ill pro rater it

    • ACT land tax is levied quarterly.

They cross-check lots of things - electricity accounts, government records, rental bonds, etc.

Tax return and registered address for voting are the main ones. They'll generally ask for why the address listed on those are different to the property address you own.

Be careful. A colleague of mine tried to do the dodge and was caught 8 years later. They'll triangulate data and if you've been.caught out, expect to pay interest. She had been doing it for years though. In your case, one quarter will be fine. Shame to hear about the ex.

Expect to pay interest on the amount, plus penalty tax (up to 50% from memory).
