JR Hokuriku Arch Pass - 7 Days Unlimited Rides (Tokyo - Hokuriku - Osaka Area) ¥25500 (~A$265) @ JR West / A$255.79 @ Klook

851

Not sure if this pass is widely known.

Those planning to travel to Japan (Tokyo, Osaka, Kobe, Kyoto, Nara area) may want to consider this alternative. This pass is much cheaper than JR whole Pass after the price hike (About half the price). Price of this pass will also increase from March 16 (¥30000). I recommend to purchase from Klook as it is cheaper. Be mindful that it will take longer to travel from Tokyo to Osaka compare to using JR whole pass. But I personally don’t mind, especially if you like to visit other regions such as Nagano or Kanazawa. This pass can also be used for local JR trains, travel to and from Narita airport, Haneda Airport & Kansai Airport. Hope this helps some people.

  • is haneda the only place to get physical welcome suica card?

    • I got mine at the Keisei Ticket Counter at Narita Terminal 2 a couple of weeks ago

  • How does this pass/trains work with extra luggage (30kg suitcase)? Do you need to book or pay additional space?

    • +1

There is overhead luggage racks or you can stand with it at the back of the carriages if too bulky. Could possibly keep it in spare seat next to you if the train isn't busy.

    • On some of the Shinkansen, each seat "cluster" (2 or 3 seats) can be rotated around, by pushing a pedal while standing in the aisle. So each seat cluster can face the front of the train or the rear of the train. Usually all of the seats are facing the front of the train.

So if you have two clusters of seats booked, you can rotate one so there is a wedge-shaped space between that seat and the seat behind it, and your suitcases may fit into that space. Did this myself last year with a large-ish suitcase just under the 160cm limit, as the overhead luggage racks were packed.

However, the two clusters of seats you have booked are now facing each other, with not a lot of room between them. We had to sit angled in our seats due to the lack of knee room, or one person sat with the opposite person's knees between their knees. Not something you'd want to do with a stranger!

I don't know how you find out which Shinkansen have rotating seat clusters. On some, I couldn't see a way to make them rotate, so maybe they can't rotate. There are YouTube clips about the Shinkansen seats, check those out.

  • Does anyone know the best deal for going to Osaka to Tokyo and then coming back to Osaka but not for two or 3 weeks?

    • +1

Due to the time between your two trips, I think the only economical choice is individual train tickets, or plane tickets.

Are you travelling back to Osaka because that's where your flight home departs from? A better option may be to book your international flights so you land at Osaka and depart from Tokyo.

      • That's alright I'll just buy an Individual ticket back Osaka

I've done a bit of reading, and there are also buses from Tokyo to Osaka, but strangely they don't show up in Google maps when I ask for directions and choose public transport.

The tickets are a fair bit cheaper than Shinkansen, it looks like tickets start at 3900 yen if you book ahead. But the journeys I can see are either "all day" (start at ~8am) or "all night" (start at ~9pm) and take nine or ten hours. If you can sleep well on a bus, I suppose the overnight journeys also save you a night of accommodation, so a double saving compared to Shinkansen.

Here's where I found the info, possibly there are other bus companies too: https://willerexpress.com/en/bus_search/tokyo/all/osaka/all/

Edit: there are more bus companies, see here: https://tokyocheapo.com/travel/transport/tokyo-to-osaka-fast…
