After a while, RGB lights become just so gimmicky… Dimmable whites are good though.

    • i think this model is actually rgb+cct (so actually has an option for a clean white scale from warm to day white, as opposed to 'mixed' white scales produced by mixing r,g,b channels, which in many cases looks a bit off).

      • I think every coloured lightbulb from Lifx & Philips Hue is RGBCCT. The ones you're talking about are budget offerings but these days even $20 bulbs have dedicated white LEDs.

      • Yeah I had the LIFX day dusk ones and they go from cool to warm, as well as dimmable. But it was also only like $60 for 4 bulbs.

Yeah the colour part is gimmicky, but the whites on this are real nice for daily use. I use them with Home Assistant for adaptive lighting.

The colour is an overpriced gimmick but good for distracting kids and parties.

      • +1

I use a dimmed red setting for the lights above the TV which works well

    • I have a full smart globe set up at home and I have to agree, the pendants over our kitchen bench top are the only ones I change the colour of when we have friends over it adds to the ambiance, I guess if you were prone to having parties the multi coloured downlights would be good with music pumping but yeah I cannot see any other use case for the added cost.

        any other use

ambience when doin the misso in the lounge?

i actually use rgb e27 lamps in floor lamps, set down to 1% RED on a timer schedule at night (kids night light, and in the hallway/lounge/kitchen as its a softer light then the tuneable white at 1% warm white and i find helps preserve night vision if i need to go get a glass of water etc).

        • +1

Not a bad idea, I have a sensor module in the hallway for that purpose, but on a much smaller LED light that sits below eye level to light up the floor, that way I avoid having lights on unnecessarily in the middle of the night, but all depends on the layout of the house I guess.

        • red - is that kinda creepy? Setting up a test light now, hope we don't have nightmares…

I used to have some uplights flash blue a few times when rain was forecast for the next day. But then IFTTT restricted everything and I no longer have that setup, and i basically don't use the colours at all atm

    • +1

I just do 'magic shows' twice a year using the flow function on my Yeelights 😂 not going to bother getting a coloured one next

    • I have these and they are awesome, we mostly use the warm light at night and bright cool light during working hours, it's great to add some mood when you have guests over or use some of the hue active scenes when you have a party. At the end of the day it's whatever floats your boat.

    Downlights are $10 at Bunnings

      Sunlight is free.

      Just as relevant.

      • -2

        Yer sunlight works 24hrs right?

        • +11

That's correct - the sun doesn't actually turn off at night, contrary to popular belief.

@andresampras: Found the fool paying $300 for downlights 😆

            • +3

@patso: I've never actually bought any smart downlights.

But if I do, Hue will be top of my shopping list for various reasons.

If you can't or don't want to understand the difference between smart lights and non-smart lights, calling me a fool doesn't put you in the best light.

              • @andresampras: I can definitely suggest give the Ikea Tradfri a look. Have had no issues with mine, and it runs Zigbee like Hue does, but doesn't come with the same price tag!

Rich coming from the one who doesn't understand the difference between a downlight and the sun

4 pack of Nanoleaf Essentials Downlight is only $179.99

    https://nanoleaf.me/en-AU/products/ceiling-lights/downlight/…

They are Matter over Thread compatible

    • Interesting, but Zigbee 3.0/ZHL is tried and true…
Does anyone have experience with the resilience of matter/thread vs zigbee?

      • I upgraded my HueBridge to Matter/Thread and had a bunch of issues (slow response mainly, occasional 'no response').

I reverted to the original Hue setup and it's back to near-100% reliable again.

Maybe I upgraded too early, but I'm not touching Matter until I need to down the track.

When it comes to lighting, Hue has been consistently reliable and hassle free.
I longer use the Hue hub, but ZHA in home assistant.

The Hue remote design is stylish and slim but I find them battery hungry and prone to dropping off randomly. (I had the V1).
For what it's worth, my new favourite remote is the Ikea RODRET $10 remote that takes a single AAA rechargeable cell and not expensive CR2450.
Of course to mix Ikea remotes and Hue lights you need either Smart Things or Z2M, Home assistant.

      The dreaded multicolour flash…

edit: slightly off topic but I'm yet to find a wireless switch with really nice tactile clicks. The new hue dimmer is prob the best I've tried - better than the moe's, loratap and a bunch of other no-name zigbee switches off aliexpress. If anyone knows of nicer ones I'm all ears

edit 2: the old tradfri switch had a nice click actually. pity it failed in a year or so

        https://www.ikea.com/au/en/p/rodret-wireless-dimmer-power-sw…

This one clicks nice and seems more reliable than the Tradfri. Time will tell though, but it definitely pairs very fast in ZHA interview.

      • I've got one of the Aqara ones (WXKG12LM) and it's got a good click (IMO), nothing fancy… actually not sure if it fits your bill ("really nice tactile clicks") now that I think about it, but I'm happy with it!

Also has the capability for multiple types: single click, double click, long press, release after long press and shake are all supported in ZHA (Home Assistant).

        • Cheers will have a look.

Wait…is SHAKE a trigger option?? that's cool but not sure I'd use it

          • @andresampras: Yeah it is an option. Not terribly useful: I did have it configured, but since we actually use it as a movable button, sometimes when it got moved it triggered the shake action. I assume it's got an accelerometer/gyro in it.

It also reports temperature (but not humidity), although not sure it's very accurate: mine is currently reporting 30°C, but my other sensors in areas nearby are all reporting ~25-26°C. Probably affected by it's own heat, although I wouldn't have thought it produced that much…

            • @Chandler: interesting thanks.

I'll have to revisit all this when I one day finally set aside time to uproot my Hue/Tuya/Zemismart/Homekit setup to go HA

    • Not really, some of the hue zigbee lights are very finicky, I had a few fails on me already, they just started losing memory, not returning correct state. It was typicall behaviour of most zigbee products where you will eventually get bad seeds out of the bunch, although no where close to the xiaomi aqara failure rate. Funny things was some of those bad lights got taken off the hue bridge and worked OK with the generic hub.

JB has updated the deal, now includes a Philips Hue 2.0 Bridge as part of the bundle of 4 Hue colour down lights for the same price so even better value!
