Possibility of Returning an iPhone 15 Pro Max to Officeworks after Opening

G'day. As a longtime Android user, I recently switched to the iPhone 15 Pro Max after Officeworks confirmed they could beat Costco's recent sale price.

However, after using the camera, I'm disappointed. It's not as impressive as I expected, and my S23 Ultra arguably takes better photos.

Can anyone confirm if I can return the iPhone to Officeworks? The phone gets quite warm after just a few photos, and the touchscreen feels less responsive compared to my S23 Ultra. Would these reasons be enough for a return?

Thanks in advance!

What are they going to do with it?

      • +16

Cause if they can’t resell it, why would they take it back?

@deme: Then one would argue, OP should have bought the phone from Apple not O/W.

              • +4

@deme: they could use it as a demo, or for parts during warranty…but OW?

                  • +28

@deme: Many retailers are provided demos so no.

Why should retailer cop the lose of selling for parts, OP could sell it for parts…

All OP had to do was try out the phone in a number of places, use the camera, and work out it wasn't for him. But no, he rips open a new phone and wants to bare no responsibility, and pass this to the retailer which will inevitable trickle down to the retailers customers no doubt. Very selfish behaviour.

@cloudy: Never said they did. Just said that Apple does. Do you think Apple doesn't make a loss on returns?

                      • @deme: Apple has new, empty iPhone boxes, and a shrink wrap machine.

                      • @deme:

Do you think Apple doesn't make a loss on returns?

Yep they don’t. I just explained it to you so clearly, need me to step by step explain it again?

                        • -2

@cloudy: So Apple resells used phones but repackaged them as new?

                          • +2

                            @deme: My gosh…

Demos are provided for free to the stores.

OW gets demo from Apple, Apple doesn’t have to give OW a brand spanking new phone for a demo, they get selfish individuals whom return used phones and these phones can be used for demos.

                            Hence, the answer is Yes.

OW has no use for used phone

              • @deme: Apple have a well oiled refurbished program, I think they will find something to do with those 14 day returns.

Or maybe they have enough cash to burn returns at the next apple bbq.

          • +9

            @deme: Officeworks isn't Apple…

  • How long ago did you get it?

  • +9

Most likely you won't get a refund, their change of mind policy needs to have the product in re-saleable condition.

Your phone cannot be retail resold.

Sell the phone privately and cut your loses.

      • +38

I wouldn’t call them defects, more like unreasonable expectations or excuses for refunds.
You’d think people would try the phones first at various stores before dropping 2.5k on it.

And I know Apple Store offers a 14-day no-questions-asked return policy.

Then you should have bought from Apple direct. Officeworks is not Apple.

      Officeworks policy be damned
If you sell something of unmerchantable quality you have to accept the return and repay full retail price

How is a flagship Iphone of unmerchantable quality?
I'd like to see ACCC's response.

What did Officeworks say when you called them?

      • +17

Why not? Why are you even asking here?

Can we automate these obvious suggestions? (Yes, I like them)

    Highly unlikely

Change of Mind Returns – 30 Days
If you have changed your mind about your purchase, Officeworks will be pleased to offer you a refund or exchange provided that:

You return the item within 30 days of purchase
You produce a satisfactory proof of purchase (being your original register receipt or online proof of purchase, such as a tax invoice)
The item is in re-saleable condition, including its original packaging (if any), is unused and as sold

It will be warm for first few days since the device is learning your usage patterns. Warm up will be less in the next few days but not as good as S23 Ultra.

Personally, I don't like iPhone 15 Pro Max that I bought dor my wife. S23 Ultra is much better.

    • Thanks, good to know that heat up problem won't last.

So you didn’t do your own due diligence and check out a $2200~ product before buying and now you want someone else to bear the consequences?

    • -6

That's on me. I've only looked up online articles and YouTube camera comparisons between the iPhone 15 Pro Max and S24 Ultra. Now I see they might be biased and definitely weren't enough research for such a big purchase.

To be fair, the Officeworks store I visited wouldn't even let me take the phone off the display to try the camera myself.

        Crikey, matey!
You should have walked out of that O/W store in outright disgust.
But on the plus side, they let you p/m Costco.

        • Not just matching, but beating it by 5% actually

          • +10

@Pennywiser: nice, now you can gumtree it without much loss

      • Apparently since you have preferences, that means other people have bias.

(Samsung, Apple, Pixel have photographic 'looks' based on post-processing. You like too-warm photos, maybe Samsung is your thing)

  • +5

This is why you buy from Apple.
Their 14 day no questions policy is excellent.

Put it on gumtree for $1900 ish and someone will buy it.

    • -4

My cheap ass couldn't resist that additional 5% off and now I might have to deal with the seeming endless scammers on the internet lol

      • +2

Was it worth the 5% saving? Na… me either.

  • +3

as above mentioned, you should buy from apple direclty if you want change of mind return.

I would also like to know if officework will take this activated phone back and provide full refund as it is clearly big loss for them

  • +3

Should have just buy it from Costco, I'm guessing you don't have membership. Costco return policy is 90 days for change of mind, won't matter you have used it.

Should have bought s23 ultra. I've seen one in recent NZ trip, my mum has it, very impressive photos, significantly much better than my s10+.

  • +4

    Lol,
Should've bought it from Apple then.

I would hardly class an Iphone 15 Pro Max as defective.

Literally a flagship. Why should Officeworks be left out of pocket because you didn't do you due dilligence?

  • +2

    Extremely unlikely, I reckon.

Having said this, I do on rare occasions see items that have clearly been opened, but returned due to change of mind being sold again on shelves at officeworks (and other retailers) for a discounted price. They usually have this bright sticker with handwriting explaining what is wrong with it or why it was returned. 🤷🏻‍♂️

  • +2

Curious what prompted you to try to switch? There will be good and bad on both sides of the fence. iPhones are supreme when it comes to video quality, and 3rd party app quality, while Androids have a broader 3rd party app range, and more customisability. Samsung S23 Ultra has amazing cameras for sure, so that might have been a bad expectation to carry going in.

  • +4

What improvements in image quality were you expecting over the S23 Ultra?

  • +3

if you want a better camera why not buy an actual camera and a decent $500 phone.

    • -1

True, a Motorola for around that price and a GoPro would beat the pants off most phones for $1000+

    • -1

If you haven't realised by now, it was an excuse that the OP wanted to use to return an open box ("change of mind") Apple device.

  • +4

It's not really fair to expect a retailer to take a hit based on change of mind. They can't resell it. But that's the entitlement level people have these days I guess…

  • Why would you buy a new phone when you have a perfectly good one? Your problem not ours.

    • It's a First world problem.

  • You know… I don’t believe you that the photos are inferior to the S23. Keep the phone. It’s good. If you want to take better photos of your salad, get a Canon.

  • +2

ill give u tree fiddy for it

    • God damn Loch Ness Monstah I ain't givin' you no tree fiddy

  • +1

Smartphone being too warm and photos being worse than a competitor phone is not a valid reason for the seller to offer refund. Those issues were out of their control. Its reasonable to expect both those issues.

If you are constantly wanting the best technology or quickly bored you can trade in your current phone at those second hand phone stores to swap for a different phone.

It's owners in this same situation that supply the products for the used phone stores you see in the malls.

I'd recommend have a go at asking for a refund. The worst is they say no.

Another option is advertise online to swap your phone with anyone with the Android model you are interested in. Pick the person with the best condition phone. Otherwise sell at a loss and take it as an education to research better for next expensive purchase.

  • +2

iphone has better video recording, that is a fact

  • Do you want a full refund or just a partial?

  • Officeworks and JB Hi-Fi won't honour the change-of-mind policy for open-box Apple items. I was denied a refund for an iPhone 13 (after 14 days of purchase) from Officeworks and an iPad Mini 6 (after 12 days of purchase) from JB Hi-Fi.

  • Didn’t want to demo one before buying?

Sell privately, cop your loss and move on.

  • +1

0 chance, there's also a scam going round where people buy iPhones, open them and replace the phone with anything else (batteries, dead phones etc) and then re-seal with Apple genuine seal stickers bought online.
