Exchanging Money (USD to Yen)

Travelling with Family to Japan and want to have some cash on hand as an initial starter when we are there. Planning to exchange some USD I have to Yen…

  1. In general is it better to exchange money in Australia….or better in Japan?
  2. What is the best place to exchange physical money in Melbourne?

Thanks all…

  • United Currency Exchange

I would exchange it for AUD in Melbourne to use at home and get JPY from ATMs in Japan.

  • Where abouts in Melb?
If city there is one in QV near the san churros.
If south east one in Springvale has good rates.
Obviously others but they have good rates

  • Don't change the USD to Yen in Australia as you you may have to pay twice for the exchange. Grab a little cash from a CBD currency exchange and use your card in Japan for the rest.

The airport has ATMs everywhere…… Get some out when you land.

  • When you have foreign currency in-hand, the best way to not lose money is to spend it in the country of origin. Save your USD for you next visit to the US where it's always needed for tipping. When you need foreign currency the most expensive source is anywhere other than the country of origin, where you'll pay for the labour costs and supply chain logistics of having it dispensed by a human from a cash drawer in a retail shopfront.

    • completly agree.

I travel all over the world and most of the time i get the best deals from ATMs in the country of origin.

I have USD for emergencies/bribes etc as that is the most universal IF im forced to exchange. However you want low denominations, so the source of most of my USD is converting the remaining local currency back once getting to the airport.

Yen is best got in Japan. If you have to, you can exchange at the airports but best rates are generally in town in Ginza.

    • Any recommendation on a (number) of good place/s to exchange AUD to Yen in Tokyo?

      • why bother? just bring your card?

I have ING card that now passes on ATM operator fees and didnt get charged any fees for ATM withdrawals in 711.

thats the standard orange everyday deal - https://www.ing.com.au/rates-and-fees/orange-everyday-fees.h…

        excludes International ATM operator fees

idk, i just dont understand the desire to carry copious amounts of money.

        • For backup really. I do have Bankwest ATM but also would like some local currencies on me. Not copious :)

        https://ginza.exchange/?lang=en

        Highly rated. Near Shimbashi Station

  • As a general rule, never deal with FX in AUS. the cost of labor makes the markup too much.

USD is hugly universal for currency exchange.

Btw, dont exchange money in foreign countries where possible. Just use the ATM and get cash out.

In Japan 711 have their ATMs that are free for foreigners. Most atm fees there are based if you do it after 10? 11? pm

btw, i went to japan (narita) and there are ATMs everywhere. at the airport there are several. I promise you wont have trouble finding an ATM. You wont need any money for arrival.

  • In Japan only big departmental store and some retailers and restaurants accept CARD.I always bring more cash for spend.
