Best Subtle Dash/Rear Cam for an EV?

Just got myself a Cupra Born and hoping to have the added insurance of a dash cam for any potential bingles/EV hate crimes that it might be involved in.

Price isn't a huge issue, but my wishlist includes:

  • Wide angle cameras to capture as much in frame as possible.
  • Subtle style as there's already a lot of cameras/sensors on the car.
  • Separate rear camera that can remotely communicate with the front camera.
  • Ability to be hard wired to 12v battery (to avoid messy cables).
  • Able to auto-record based on motion/stop based on no motion.
  • Able to over-ride the above and manually record (preferably even when ignition isn't on).
  • Preferable swappable SD over internal memory.

Bonus points if it can automatically prevent recording at home based on GPS or similar.

I have a Thinkware U1000 in my Genesis, which also has a few inbuilt cameras.

Excellent video and I think that it ticks all of your boxes.

  • I have a $900 Blackvue front/rear dash cam but took a punt ant purchased a 70MAI 4K one last year. I found the phone app friendlier to use than the Blackvue one, especially after they updated it and forced everyone to setup an account etc. Picture quality is pretty much on par with the Blackvue which was more than double the price.

Looks like there is a newer, better model out now too: https://dashcam.70mai.com/a810.

  • Been using this one in the wife's car for a year with no issues.

Just replaced my old dual cam Uniden with the same in my own car.

Decent phone app, 4K on the front and FHD on the rear.

Keep an eye out for sales as I got the last one for $269.99

  • for an EV

Coz that's different to an ICE when it comes to dash cameras?

In the case of a Nissan Leaf, the Viofo hardwire kit wasn't able to be used because the overall voltage of the vehicle was lower than the hardwire kits lowest low voltage protection mode and it wasn't allowing the camera to operate as it would in an ICE car.

I read the post as a humble brag about my new German EV. Ohh and by the way I need a dashcam.

Everyone else knows Cupra comes from Spain.

The cupra born is made in Germany using the Volkswagen EV plant.

I'm not sure - the hardwired battery connection may be different. Just ensuring all the details are provided for proper guidance.

      • dw mate, those Toyota dudes get triggered when they see or hear EeeVees

I have a Navman Minivue in mine- though mine isn't hardwired. Nothing in the rear.

I mainly wanted to mention that I wouldn't worry too much about hate crimes in a Born (though not ruling it out). It looks fairly normal car-ish so hard to tell at a glance. It's mainly Teslas from what I can tell that really cop it. The worst I've had so far is getting a greasy look from a Landrover that was ICEing a charger I was pulling up at, while a friend with a tesla copped a paint ball the day he picked it up.
