You kinda just missed it. M2 Air on Education pricing with a gift card bonus and purchased with discounted gift cards.

    Or… a second-hand M1 Air.

    • Yeah i saw that deal, looks like the gift card of the table now, but the pricing still looks good, at least 240 ish off the normal Apple store

    • What did you pay in the end?

depends what value means to you

are you just going to be browsing the internet and watching youtube? a $700 second hand 3 year old Macbook Pro will do just fine. you don't need 32gb of ram, 1tb hdd and 8gb gfx to watch youtube.

Video memory is shared with the unified memory on Apple silicon btw. It's kind of a monster all in one deal, basically a smartphone on steroids. Steroids doesn't quite sum it up, it's more like a smartphone was contaminated with nuclear tests and turned into Godzilla.

    • I'll do software dev on it, Java and some ai, database, python, docker etc, so at least 16gb. My current work issued device is an m1 pro with 16gb. The sweet spot would be 16 24 or 32gb ram. There has to be a best bang for buck deal somewhere. I'll keep looking. 😅

  • Probably the one you already own. There isn't much reason to upgrade from the M1. They haven't improved much. Storage pricing is pathetic.

  • I have to give the work one back and we not allowed to use it for anything personal, its locked down just strictly for work.

There was a big redesign between m1 and m2, so I'm going for either an m2 pro or m3, but yeah the upgrades are mental.

    • $900 extra for 2Tb of space which is slower than a $250 2Tb samsung nvme …. Apple really need to stop this.

      • I agree, and they know they can get away with it. I've now owned 2 lenovo and 2 dell and wow do they suck. Apple know they got something special and people will pay. First time I've used Mac was when work gave me the apple and 3 years later, it still makes anything look ancient. I usually try buy a lenovo or dell as they are pretty good at handling Linux dual boot, but omg the battery life on Intel and AMD is enough to drive you to insanity. I can use this m1 pro an entire day doing full scale coding and after 8 hours i still got 60% battery. That's just insane, throw in the polished os and I'm already sold. I like the Unix like os and it's quiet and stays relatively cool. Damn you apple.

  • The one that Walmart is selling.

    • They ship to oz?

      • google it.

        • Googling 😀

        • ok so you buy from walmart, ships to this service
          https://www.myus.com/blog/buy-american-goods-and-send-to-aus…

then they ship to you…interesting, does it work out a lot cheaper? Warranty etc?

@grantster: Doesn't make sense to me (unless there is a deal I'm missing). $699 USD is $1061 AUD. You should have to pay 10% import duty, so $1161. You haven't accounted for US sales tax or shipping yet, and you can buy them in Aus for $1200 very easily.

  • Depends what you use it for. If you tend to purchase tech brand new, easy decision: M3 MacBook Air. If you're ok with pre-owned and don't use it for demanding tasks (e.g. NLE, DAW): pre-owned M1 due to the low cost.

  • can you wait a little while? there are romours of a budget macbook but it may not come till june or oct. Of cource it may not come out till next year either.
