Mortlach Cask Strength 13YO 2021 Single Malt Whisky 700ml $149 (RRP $240) C&C Only @ Vintage Cellars (Free Membership Required)

50

This seems like a good deal for a 13 year old limited release single malt. $149 for VC members (membership is free). Not much stock in Brisbane, but may vary between states.

Is it any good? Not sure, reviews seem decent if unspectacular. I couldn't find anywhere selling this even close to this price, so might be worth it.

If you're dropping that sort of cash on a bottle, it's worth looking at joining The Whisky Club as they frequently get some spectacular drops for their monthly memberships and the price is always around that mark.

    • Good advice. I grabbed this as a gift, but Whisky Club sounds mighty tempting.

WC is a miss more often than not. They have peddled some very average bottles with great marketing and WOM based on an occasional good/popular release. The good ones are now always an add-on/ballot. Still worthwhile browsing but because it is a Whisky club bottle, doesn't make it good.

Strongly agree! Very strongly. The peddled a Starward hard (as they do for all their whiskies) late last year which was close to being the most undrinkable whisky I have ever bought. It was seriously flawed and I was angry at spending so much money on it when I could have got something decent for the price. I have a growing collection of about 25 bottles now and this was rock bottom. Hot toddy liquid at best.

Having said that the Glen scotia mermaid as a $185 add in for Feb this year was also one of the best whiskies I’ve had in a long time. Topped really only by Springbank and sullivans. I was very impressed. DYOR always with whisky club.

Not familiar with Mortlach (Speyside) so did some googling. It's not for me (Islay single malt fan).
    "Owned by Diageo."
"The whisky is a key component in several Johnnie Walker bottlings."

Mortlach is often described as "meaty" so might be worth a try (this particular bottle is quite sweet though)

  • What store is it available in? Pls

That's a cracker for a cask strength 13yo , might want to add cask strength to description. 14yo standard mortlach is pretty good

    • In stock at Paddington.

      • Thanks but I won't buy lol. Will send to my mate.
        Hope you enjoy it

  • Use code SITEWIDE for 10% off as well…

    https://www.vintagecellars.com.au/specialoffers/promotion

    • Doesn't seem to work for member price — when you apply the code, it'll raise the price back to the non-member price - 10%

  • Pass based on the average reviews on whiskybase. Can get much better for $150

  • 86 on Whisky Fun, which very good for them.

Ex-virgin and refill American oak. As a matter of fact, and you cannot make this up, I just slept 'with' a pack of European grey wolves in a magnificent lodge in Lorraine. Wonderful animals but boy are they noisy at night! Colour: white wine. Nose: another one that's pretty sharp and austere at first, chalky, waxy, grassy, the main difference being that many more fruits would then come out, chiefly white and yellow peaches, then muesli and something like rhubarb jam. I would suppose it's the virgin oak that imparted more 'sweetness'. With water: porridge, damp oatcakes and plain sourdough. Raw wool. Gone are the fruits. Mouth (neat): once again, same style as that of the Ultimate, only with more fruitiness, in this very case more lemons. With water: very good now, tight for sure but with a lot of lemon, gooseberries, green plums and rhubarb, plus a little muscovado sugar to round this off. Still, wonderful tightness. Finish: long, grassier, with notes of green tea and walnut skins. Loses a part of its fruitiness. Chalky aftertaste. Comments: showcase dry un-sherried and un-meaty Mortlach.
