Anyone Know a Good Digital Photo Frame?

I recall thinking these were cool, then they were lame, now I'm old and I think they're ok again (just visiting someone with a nice 9 inch or so frame)

Anyone know if there's anything in say the 14 inch range which is nice?

I know you can buy 1440p 14 inch displays for about 100 according to a bargain I saw this week.

I figure something is going to be at least 200.
Anyone still rocking one?

(Yes, I do have a raspberry pi spare but that will look so dinky with the mini HDMI cable in the side….)

My wife did ask me for 9" and to make it hurt, so I put it in 3 times and slapped her.

    Quite a few on Amazon

thinking these were cool, then they were lame,

They aren't cool / popular and never will be, since they are just single use devices that perform a single function and can't be repurposed for other stuff since they lack HDMI inputs. Will end up being e-waste once you're bored of looking at it.

At least a portable LCD monitor will be useful for work and DIY rasp Pi projects.

Also, If you plug in a Chromecast / Amazon Fire Stick into a TV or monitor you can set your photos as a screen saver, this might be a better way to repurpose old displays that are lying around into a frame.

    • I have a 14" 1080p spare monitor I could consider using. (portable) but I think to keep the cables neat I'd need right angle cables.

I wondered maybe I could use a REAL picture frame and wedge it in there to hide the cables makes it look nicer?

      • Right angle plugs work well. I use one on my TV to reduce the force on the socket.

You could build a wide frame to hide the HDMI port.

I used an old tablet (that I don't use anymore as they were unbearably slow and outdated), there are some free apps that you can install. I plugged it with a smart plug, and it works surprisingly well.

    • The only tablet I have is 10" ipad and it's ok but it's kinda too new for it.

Something like a Google Nest Hub because it's easy to access content. The photo frames were annoying because they used to have rubbish displays and weren't easy to update/upload.

  • Aura ones are good

I received a “Frame” at Christmas and it's great, comes in different sizes and available through a few stockists.

  • I would consider using a device that hooks up to the portable screen you have - the reason being that you could use google photos to cycle new photos through it automatically instead of having to manually add new photos to the frame.

I have a google home hub and configured it show photos from an album in Google Photos. I then have the album configured to add new photos of family members - using face detection.

So basically whenever I take new photos of family, it gets auto added to that album, then the Google home hub takes random photos from that album, including new photos as they are added - all automatically.
