The Toyota Camry Equivalence of White Good?

I have secured a new lease, going from shared room to a 2bedroom unit; we are going to furnish out the whole unit. I am looking for some good value, durable, dump, non-smart appliances to buy.

In your opinion, what brand is durable like a Toyota Camry? I feel like anything that is cheap and not LG/Samsung would do.

Comments

  • Tv = Panasonic, no issues
Washing Machine = Samsung, minor issue but does the work.
Fridge = on and off issues since 1 year but does what it's supposed to do.

All of these bought together 13 years ago.

Dishwasher = De'Longhi refurbished, no issues. Bought 7 years ago.

    • You forgot to mention the brand for your fridge

      • +1

        Sorry, it's Samsung surprisingly.

  • I had an LG fridge for 12 years, before I replaced it with a Samsung fridge in 2020. Only upgraded because I needed more storage space (640L vs 455L).

I also have 2 Samsung TVs. One I've had for 14 years and another for nearly 8 years, both going strong.

You really can't go wrong with LG or Samsung.

  • Probably should be a two part question:

1 Who makes liable/durable fridges and has the best after sales service including warranty claims

  • +1

    There is none.

The best advice I can offer is to drop the cash on a Choice membership and look at their reviews, I've had one for years and it's never steered me wrong.

What you'll find is that brand reputation doesn't apply across categories, they might make a good washer but a shit fridge. Also brands change hands, for example Westinghouse and Electrolux used to make ovens here, now no longer. Change in manufacturer change in quality.

  • My appliances are about 8 years old.

lg 8kg inverter motor washer needed its injectors/sprayers replaced after it semi flooded my garage. Done under warranty in 2nd or 3rd year year.

samsung fridge needed a tinker with something to stop it frosting over in 2nd or 3rd year. done under warranty.

cheap Kogan clothes dryer has been phenomenal. circa 5-6 years old.

Hisense standing freezer about 4-5 years old, no problem.

Fisher paykel dishwasher. goes good. 5-6 years old.

Fisher paykel ceramic cooktop stopped working. wire had been knicked either during installation or manufacture. fixed under warranty after paying electrician who installed to come back and fix.

Fisher paykel oven has loose door handel that is actually really hard to get to and tighten.

My stupid microwave without a rotating dish doesnt heat well but hasn't died yet. cant wait for it to die. cant remember the brand. but dont get a flat base microwave unless you hate evenly heated food.

kogan lx 12 and then lx15 robovacs have been amazing. insane bargain now on the lx16 with auto empty dock. just under 300 bucks!!

    • my sony bravia died after 13 months. Didn't know that I could argue that it should have reasonably lasted longer than that.

  • Get a used Menumaster commercial grade microwave for cheap off of Gumtree or eBay. They are rock solid and in my experience heat food way more evenly than consumer models.

  • I have Hisense for fridge (had my side by side for around 6-7 years, no issues), Heire dishwasher (very nice, no issues so far, had it 2 years), Electrolux washing machine (solid front loaders, around 8 years and going strong). I also have a hand me down Hisense TV… it functions, but it is not a good one by any stretch, Sony for TV all the way. Breville microwave is around 15-16 years old at a guess, no issues whatsoever. Vaccum is a Bissel petvac, 12 years, going great.

    Maybe a poll.

I dont know, ive usually brought the cheapest I can find and had mixed results every time.

  • All of the appliances I own I've had since I moved into my house in 2012. They all (sans the dishwasher because that stayed with the property when I sold it) have survived two moves and live in my current house.

    I have:

2x TV's (1x Sony bought way back in 2010 and 1x Samsung bought in 2012, neither have missed a beat. Interestingly enough the TCL we bought <6 months ago has already undergone a mainboard swap.)

    Westinghouse 420L bottom mount fridge/freezer.

    Panasonic microwave.

    Hoover washing machine.

The dishwasher I had was an Asko - I loved that thing and it was well worth the extra $$.

  • Samsung and LG for me.

The fridge has lasted over 10 years now, TV is going strong after 5 years. Phone last my 2 year contract without issues.

LG washing machine and dryer have lasted the past 10 years. Used 5-6 times per week.

    TV: Sony
    Fridge: Mitsubishi
    Washer: Bosch or Miele
    Dishwasher: Bosch or Miele
    Microwave: Panasonic or Sharp
    Vacuum: Dyson
    Coffee Machine: Breville

  • Fisher & Paykel has been my go to for a few houses now. So far so good apart from a washer dryer…they recovered from this with a new unit outside of warranty that I simply sold on. Never get a washer dryer unless space is at a serious premium.

Oh honorable mention to Sharp too. I've had a tv, fridge and microwave and they never break.

  • +1

My first microwave was a Sharp. It lasted for 30 years!

  • LG frontloader 10yrs no faults
LG Fridge 1 fault after 10yrs google/youtube /ebay and fixed for under $50

  • FWIW Bosch Serie 6 washing machine 8 years, still going strong.

Old Electrolux fridge, went for 15+ years, then sold it to someone that wanted the exact one on FB marketplace. I'm sure he's still using it.

  • Samsung for washing machines?

  • I don't think you'd find one single brand to go with. A better way to go about is, check recent reviews for a product you want to buy. Also don't expect todays appliances to last decades like it used to back in the day. So get things that serves purpose without all the maintenance baggage.

  • I hope I don't jinx myself with typing this but i've been extremely fortunate with a lot of my purchases since living out of home. Below is what i've got with almost all appliances still going strong after 12 years.

TV: Sony (12 years), Samsung (8 years)
    Fridge: LG (12 years)
Washer: Bosch (german made / 12 years)
    Dishwasher: Westinghouse (8 years)
Microwave: LG x 2 (1st one died after 10 years, 2nd one going fine after 2 years)
    Vacuum: Mielle (12 years)
Coffee Machine: Breville (1st one died after 12 years, 2nd one going fine after 1.5 years).

Would happily buy all of these products again.

    • what about dryer and hair dryer?

  • My LG washing machine is 9 years old, never had a problem. I bought an LG because my parents was 10 years old, they've still got it too.

Bought a kogan tv - terrible. Father in law has a hisense tv - terrible. Love my Samsung.

Have an Electrolux fridge - no issues, again 9 years old. Was told to avoid Korean brands in fridges.

The LG dishwasher in my old place was alot better than the Smeg i have now.

  • LG for me. I have TVs, fridges that are over 15 year old without any faults, media players etc.

  • Agree with others mentioning Bosch. I've got their side load washer, dishwasher and tools. All great quality. 5 years and not skipped a beat.

Not sure about their vacs though if they even have them.

  • Washing machine. I have a speed queen. That thing is going absolutely nowhere and has been absolutely nowhere for the past 8 years of ownership, being used at least 5 times a week.

It is absolutely no frills however it can be expensive, but it seems to be a good investment imo

    • lets hope so hey

  • Bosch #1
