Roadside Assistance Deals - QLD (Keys Locked in Car)

I’ll start off with the obligatory, yes I’m an idiot, yes I’m stupid, yes I’m hopeless at life introduction and acknowledge I locked my keys in the boot of my car. (2010 Lancer)

It appears RACQ now charge an off site sign up fee on top off the annual fee now, or have a 48 hour start period. Nor do they come and unlock your friends car for you. How times have changed..

Are there any deals at the moment for roadside or is there any other cost effective way to unlock my car?

Windows are up, no spare key and probably alarmed.

Dunno about RACQ, but I'm now a "gold" member of NRMA and they have charged the extra joining fee or 48 hours wait since I signed up last millenium.
So I wouldn't feel too bad that policies to encourage people to carry the cover, rather than only pay when needed, are a thing.

    • Sama sama and ditto.

Break the cheapest piece of glass (typically the rear door quarter ~$40 at a wreckers). Enter the vehicle. Pop the boot. Retrieve your keys. Replace glass. Winning.

I’m actually in Canberra for a holiday but car is registered in QLD. Otherwise that sounded fantastic!

  • Hi,

OP your Profile Location says: Perth.

Do you have cover with RAC (WA) already?

    Who is your Car Insurer?

If you are with AAMI and have Comprehensive Cover, AAMI Roadside Assist is an extra $86pa.
If you don't have that added on, there is a 24Hr wait to add it.
    See: https://www.aami.com.au/car-insurance/comprehensive/roadside…

Sometimes the company that services your car throws in Roadside Assistance,
    e.g. https://www.ultratune.com.au/roadside-assistance/

    • Thanks. I’ll have to update profile, based on Brisbane now but locked car on holiday in Canberra.

Sadly I haven’t got those, I’ve been holding out for the My Car Pirelli tyres deal in Nov to also get free roadside.

I’m trying to think of things, current student if there’s options.

      • Look at:
        https://www.roadsideresponse.com.au/roadside-assistance-canb…

Seems like a Pay as you Go service without 48hr qualifications.

        Also, I found:
https://www.mynrma.com.au/roadside-assistance/free2go with 1 Year Free for 17-20 year olds, but with 48hr wait to qualify. :+(

        • Thanks! I’ll have to give them a call in the morning as it appears they only work 6 til 6. But looks promising. If I can get away with $99 then I’ll take that as a win and lesson learnt. Thanks for your help!

if you're in Charnwood or Belconnen then I'm sure someone would be able to assist in unlocking your car in seconds.

        • +7

If they are in Charnwood then getting roadside assistance won't be an issue at all. The car is already gone.

Get Barnaby Joyce to come and assist. Tell him there’s a case of wine in the boot and he can have it

  • Just grab a teenager off the street and he'll get your keys in a flash.

Sign up now and call them tomorrow

Have you tried an automotive locksmith? If you're handy, gently pry open the door/window frame and fashion a wire coathanger into a tool that can pull the lock button (which I assume is mounted near the pull handle). 2010 Lancer is far from an impenetrable fortress.

  • Total tools or many other places will sell an inflatable wedge too… can be slipped in between the door frame and the body, pumped up with the attached bulb pump (like an analogue BP machine a the doctors), and that will allow you to use wire, packing strap or a very small child to reach in and spring the door handle. many of the locking buttons are hidden, flush or too smooth to get a grip on, so the handle is the activation point. Consider if you have the child locks activated on the rear (if so, the front doors will still work, or if you have manual window winders (even just on rear doors, you can fashion an apparatus to use that method to create a larger opening for the adult arm to then reach in… The alarm going off is the least of your worries… do you have a remote boot release in the passenger cabin, or purely a key entry…? what is more important between cost, time taken to resolve, cost of delay to journey, minor damage to car or the cab ride to buy the door wedge. hope you are not parked in a two hour zone… one ticket may be enough to pay for the cost of the locksmith…

Don't forget, you have a phone, and that gives your the option to watch lock picking lawyer on YT, then, when it's dark and you are hungry, crawl back out of that YT rabbit hole and have a go at raking the lock yourself… locks are usually made from soft material like brass, so they do wear and lose a lot of tolerance… sometimes, just jiggling and finessing another similar key can be effective too…
pro mafia tip… leave someone in the boot at all times to then help out when this happens again…

  • You’re clumsy too

  • Smash Rear 1/4 window would be the cheapest way, I think.

    • I thought so too until I watched a video about it - much harder/more expensive to replace a small quarter panel, way easier to just replace a normal one - they just slide back in

  • Oh the number of cars I have opened for others, nearly the most common self inflicted issue.

  • Is budget direct still the cheapest deal for roadside assistance?

  • Of course, they will charge a sign-up fee, or else everyone would only sign up when they have problems
