@netsurfer: Explains the PM. Let me see if I can find something cheap that isn't JMicron.

            • @Clear: I am also interested in a cheapo enclosure for this.
Got 2 from the Auburn store. The staff was kind to process them in two transactions.

            • +1

@Clear: Thanks mate. JMicron is fine, if insisting on Realtek SATA + NVMe chipset, it will cost too much. Since it is an enclosure for a $5 SSD, cost is more important to people. That JMicron one you recommended last time, I do use it quite often.

              • @netsurfer: There's so many I can't remember which one that is

                • +1

                  @Clear: This one:

                  Kingspec M.2 NVMe 10Gbps USB-C SSD Enclosure US$8.26 (~A$12.29)

Not sure if it was the cheapest you ever posted. You posted quite a few enclosure deals.

                  • @netsurfer: So what enclosure do we need to buy for the SSD's? That one says B&M only… Is that what we need?

                    • +1

@GTR12: You want one that supports M key. However, it is likely a USB 3.2 gen 2 enclosure supporting M key would also support B&M key.

M means x4, B&M means x2. Thing is, USB 3.2 gen 2 only runs in x2 mode so even if a x4 SSD is plugged in. However, you still need M key support. I do own a x2 NVMe (that one does have a B&M key). x2 SSDs are rare nowadays.

Sometimes, an NVMe SSD would have the letter M printed near the notch of the connector. Micron 2450 doesn't though.

                      • @netsurfer: Got it, M key, I have a 980 pro and that was easy to buy for.

Would these fit inside a HP Pavilion All-in-one 24-r180a? (asking for a friend)

  • Just an FYI for all - maybe this has been discussed already.

The drive that i got was used. It had a Windows Operating installed on it.

    • +2

Yeah, it was mentioned. All SSDs sold for $5 each are second hand ones. Most, if not all of them, are due to OEM desktops or laptops where customers ordered SSD upgrade when they placed their orders (so these 256GB ones were removed to make way for larger ones).

Richmond store puts each of them in a ssd plastic cover (but not sealed and no packaging box). Some of the stores just hand you the SSD itself.

Got 1. Now to work out what to do with it considering most PC/laptops only come with 1 x M.2 slot and chances are it's already being used.

    Sold out in Auburn

    • Thanks

    • Shit, I should read your comment before I went there.

    • back in stock

  • Hmm, don't know why it's now listed as out of stock? Sunshine had a box behind the counter, must've had about 50 in there, don't know how many boxes they had in total. They only had Micron NAND/ Phison controllers in that box, and even though it's DRAM-less, I was easily able to copy a 36.6gb VMware image to it at a consistent ~600MBps. Very impressed since it's a quick external drive for me.

Multiple stores no longer have stock. The only NSW store is out of stock so it is better to have out of stock shown to prevent people getting there and not able to get one.

A number of VIC stores probably still have them in stock. However, as a popular deal on OZB, it is unsafe to assume they will still have stock throughout the day (especially OZBers still wanting to get one will likely try those stores).

The one you have is Micron 2450, for more info, check here. These OEM SSDs often have weird names. It's Phison E19 with Micron 176L NAND (technically PCIe gen 4 x4, but at 256GB, its performance is more like PCIe Gen 3 x4).

        For $5?

EDIT: Just saw the listing update. Well how about that! Looks like only for pick up though.

  • Purchased one from Adelaide store. Unfortunately it is faulty and I’ll need to swap or return. Time and fuel has offset this bargain :-(

    • Update:
I have had to neg this deal. Incredible difficulties trying to have the faulty nvme replaced. I have never had such difficulties.

      • Bummer. I jumped on the external housing deal from the other post so haven't tried mine out. Need to clone my main 128gb drive onto the new one

        • I paid about $30 for my current enclosure so I also jumped on the deal and bought the sata/nvme combo as I have a few sata m.2 drives. It's a great price for an enclosure!

      • What happened? Centrecom wouldn't provide a full refund or you want a replacement? Centrecom's SSD warranty service is really slow, because the store might want to send it to Sunshine store's service department and have it handle the warranty support. Also, given that it is an OEM SSD, it gets even more complicated.

It is a big down side of these SSDs. When they are @#!@#, if Centrecom is unwilling to do a full refund, it will be a pain to get it replaced.

      • Honestly, for $5 you may as well have just tossed it in the bin and gotten on with your day. I waste more money than that on a Myki trip when an inspector doesn't get on.

      • Update:
        Removed neg.

Lots of issues when trying to call through or explanation via email. Whoever was addressing my emails was not reading them.
Happened to be passing by store so went in and they were really good and resolved the issues.

        • it seems my email was picked up and being processed interstate via the online team which had nothing to do with the store.
        • calling the store is kind of pointless. Depending who you get service can be pretty average. Often you speak with sales and they won’t liaise with other staff.
        • I was told I would probably need to drop of the nvme, then came back on another day if they would refund or replace.

My query was quite simple. If I was only going to receive a $5 refund I probably wouldn’t have bothered. I wanted to know if they could replace the faulty drive instead. If there was stock, and if there was no stock could I come in a week or two and call ahead so ones put aside.
        - on visiting the store they tested it straight away and replaced with a similar drive. Painless.

  • Frankston has around 30 left, I was there an hour ago

  • Careful when using them, I plugged mine into a USB adaptor and into my laptop before resuming it from hibernation. (I think) because it was detected as a windows drive my PC had a bit of a fit and failed to turn on, critical errors, pin code rejected, etc. Restarting with the drive unplugged worked. Now have it all properly wiped of data and working fine :)

Just ordered one online for pickup thanks to the heads up of @ozshopp3r above

I guess they'll transfer it between the appropriate stores if you do it this way.

  • Are they all 2280?

  • +1

Back in stock online - delivery and click and collect

  • Thanks OP just ordered one for pickup at Auburn, Ill chuck an enclosure on it and use it as a portable. No point wasting a mobo slot on 256gb

  • +1

This is awesome. Just installed it to my iMac 2013 late, super fast now.

  • Looks like all out of stock again. ordered for click n collect this morning as they said it won't be in till afternoon when i called. I suspect it'll be cancelled

    • Called auburn store. They said they should receive 400 units and to place click and collect instead to allocate stock as it may sell out for walk in.

  • Back online again! Just got 1 online.

  • deal expired, now $29

  • I picked up my click and collect order for one of these today. I managed to get a 512GB Samsung branded one. Very happy with that. Hopefully there's another deal on these soon as I could definitely use a couple more.

    • You got 51wgb instead of 256gb. Win! which store?

      • This was from the Sunshine store

  • since these comes with windows installed, can i just use it in a new build or transfer the license over?

  • Picked mine up from Auburn yesterday, thanks guys great deal. And yes mine also came with windows installed but I formatted it.

  • anybody had tried to extract the key?

I have 2 of those and seems they are using the same activation key, not quite right and not usable:
    KKKM9-R892F-XHRBK-29DCJ-XXXXX

    is yours the same?

    • +1

      Mine is different to that

    • Legally you can't use the key so not sure why you're bothering vs using other questionable sources. If you like a product just pay for it instead of stealing. Or consider some open source Linux distros

      • yes, I use Mintlinux as my main drive.
I had multiples win10 keys, just wanna use the key in my Windows Docker just in case.
