Loved it but could never beat it.
I still remember the computer player would always attack your castle while noone is around.
So I end up recruit new heroes and use the AOE spell Armageddon to guard while my strongest heroes comes back and take castle back when fail
Ahhhhhh I remember that it was a game of cat and mouse they were opportunistic and only go for it if they'd win
@Jazza2400: Yeah that's right the computer always work out the no of steps their horse can get to your castle undefended. if you load and keep someone there they run away…..its quite funny….
That was sort of the AI we had back in the days to see in action as a kid was amusing.
@Circly: The computer can also work out the strength of your hero and army. If it's overpowered and knows you will win. They run back and recruit more units…. They will not fight and ensure your steps will not reach them where possible on the map…
Those are just some quirky mechanics when I played as a teen.
So to lower their attacking numbers. New hero at castle level 1 with an army…. Defending to shed some numbers so when the main hero comes back I can guarantee win again their so call attacking hero
Same. Loved Homm 2, 3 and 4. HOMM3 was rhe best, and spent hours playing, instead of attending uni lectures.
I still have the boxes and manuals for the games… found them whilst moving house.

Yeah all his stuff is super high quality. I remember wondering where they filmed that video you linked. I used to play Ramparts every second game so have a soft spot for that other one ^_^

Haven't played those but general concensus is that they are trash and not the same anymore.
Ubisoft just ruined them and the old talents from old developers just not there. The add-ons for H3 is the bomb

Homm3 literal perfection
To anyone fondly remembering HoMM3 (@Jimothy Wongingtons @gaber @aliam @outlander @Circly @firexbug ) can i please implore to check out the mod Horn of the Abyss? It's a fan mod made to the same quality as the official expansions, with beautifully animated and balanced factions, campaigns and new content, also compatible with the HD mod. I can't recommend it enough if you love the game and crave a breath of fresh air for it that isn't a typical cringey fan mod.

Songs of Conquest is a good modern take on HOMM3/4.

Cheers, bought V. I played I & II but I can't remember whether I played III so thinking of also getting III. Should I play/replay III before V to not ruin the experience of III or it doesn't matter? Also, should I even bother about IV?
IV was actually my favourite. Big graphics upgrade from 3 (although still bad given it’s an early 2000’s game). Differences are that when building your monsters you build have a choice of Tier 2,3,4 and you can only build one of each e.g if you’re playing Order you can build Mages OR Gold Golem from tier 2, not both like in III or V.
Other major difference is that your hero is basically another troop. You level them up, give them items and they can usually turn the tide of battle depending on the magic/skills they learn. They also have HP and you need them alive to capture any town/resource.III IS objectively the best in the franchise, IV they experimented a bit, it’s a bit more niche but I love it. V they went back to III’s style and it worked well, but it just wasn’t III. VI and VII were bleh. Slow, not enjoyable.
The campaign from IV is the best though and the custom maps and campaigns are waaaaay better than 3 just given the flexibility of the level builder.
So yes, IV is definitely worth it for under $4. If it’s not your style, sure, but it could be a banger if you give it a go.

This series caused me to see more sunrises than was healthy.
I got to the point i had to delete my saves and give the game away to avoid playing.

omg I just found out there's a complete mod for Hereos 3, HoTA and there are mods that improved this game. $3.79 is a steal
