Cheapest laptop 2.5" 7200RPM hard drive?

Thinking to upgrade my hard drive but ssd is too expensive. Wondering where cheapest for 7200rpm minimum 500gb/640gb hard drive for laptop

  • I'm not an expert. But laptop HDDs are all 5400rpm from main brands.

    • No you're not. There are plenty of 7200 rpm 2.5" drives.

As for cheapest I'd just look at MSY or Umart. They will be about as cheap as it gets on regular pricing.

      • oic, should have made it clear when I said 'main brands', I actually meant laptop brands. Don't know why they don't offer 7200rpm HDDs for some middle to high-end products.

        • My Dell XPS 15z came with a 7200rpm drive and 4 year old Dell M6300 came with a 7200rpm drive. Sure that's only two data points, but saying all drives are 5400rpm in main brand laptops is simply not the case.

Either way, the OP is upgrading so what difference does it make which laptop brands come with which drives?

OP: I'd consider a hybrid drive which is part SSD and part rotating disk. The performance tests seem to show worthwhile gains.

However after having a full SSD in my XPS 15z (only 256GB though) I would struggle to go back to a normal drive. My M6300 for work is painful to use.

  • Thanks for all the reply. Was Considering Seagate hybrid drive or ssd. But not sure if it is worth the sacrifice for storage capacity of ssd for performance compared to hybrid drive. Is there lot different with hybrid and ssd drive?

  • From the reviews I've seen a hybrid is about half way between a conventional disk and a full SSD so worth the effort.

Something else to consider: In my XPS 15z I can remove the DVD drive and replace it with a hard drive caddy. You have to open the machine completely so it's not a quick changeover.

I was probably going to move the original 750GB disk there for mass storage and keep the SSD for system. The number of times I really need the optical disc is minimal. Then you have he speed where it counts and mass storage still available for large files movies etc.

  • Ok, any idea the cheapest dvd caddy, hybrid drive or ssd to get from? Will decide based on price.

  • Have you done any searching yourself?

If cheapest is your only consideration just get a Umart or MSY price list.

For an SSD I would do some research. The better brands are a bit more reliable email. e.g. Samsung Intel etc.

  • yeah, i did some research umart and msy is around $150 for hybrid drive 750gb and ssd around $180 for 256gb i think..think i will go for the 750 hybrid drive. did some research and hybrid is quite fast too.thanks guys :)
