Good USB-C Docking Station for My Laptop?

Hi all,

I currently have the following connections to my laptop directly:

  • 1 x USB-C 75W (charging)
  • 1 x USB-A monitor ligthbar (just for the power)
  • 1 x HDMI LF 27" gaming monitor
  • 1 x USB-C LG Gram +View 16" external portable monitor

I frequently take the laptop + portable monitor out on the road, and want to simplify my cabling when I arrive home / leave to ideally just unplug one USB-C cable.

What would be a good USB-C docking station to simplify my setup? I'm asking because the ones I find on Amazon aren't very clear on whether they support the displayport-over-USB-C connection I need in order to keep the portable monitor going. Budget's not really a concern for the right dock, but I would ideally like something below $150 or so.

Thanks!

I would get a new (or used) lenovo / dell docking station either off ebay or from one of the resellers you see from time to time on here. Cheap as chips - just make sure it is compatible (most are). You don't need the same brand laptop either.

This, I went through a couple of cheap amazon ones before realising it's not worth the savings and just get the tried and true Dell ones.

I have a HP one though that overheats when fully loaded (two screens, 4 USB devices)

      This +1,

Bought a Lenovo universal usb-c dock for ~$50 from one of them surplus/ex-office ebay stores after going through a few of the Amazon specials that kept playing up after a few months.

  • Have both HP and Dell docking stations. Agreed, get a proper one it's own power supply and the ports you need. No need to skimp on a critical connection node for everything. Can be cheaply sourced from marketplace or ebay. Easier to source than 2020 in the middle of covid lockdowns lol

  • I have the HP G5 Dock (https://www.hp.com/au-en/shop/hp-usb-c-dock-g5-5tw10aa.html?…)

Works perfect for what my household needs. Plug in my laptop (windows or mac)
    - Charges laptop
    - Connects the keyboard and mouse (via bluetooth dongle)
    - Connects external monitor
    - Connects audio speakers
    - Connects external webcam.

Love it, and essential of my house where I have a mac for personal, windows for work, and wife has windows for work.

I think this could work with any docking station to be honest, just need the right connections/power delivery

    • That looks nice, but I'm pretty sure that doesn't meet my needs as I have an external monitor that uses a USB-C plug. I need at least one additional USB-C port, and it needs to support the displayport protocol over that port as well.
