The New $499 Ozito 460mm 36v Mower Vs The Older $399 Version

I am in the market for a battery lawn mower for a 630m2 block. There would be around 400-450 sqm of lawn to mow I think.

I came across the $499 Ozito 460mm mower and it has good reviews on Bunnings website. But all the youtube reviews are of the older model, which I think was were selling for $399. Curious if the new model has $100 worth of improvement.

Have anyone used both models and found any difference in performance? Visually the only difference is the battery housing compartment and the paint job. Wonder if it is the motor and other components are same on both versions.

Havent used, but the specifications look the same. If anything, i hope the newer version is either same or better performing.

The battery housing does not provide parallel connectivity tho, just either use the first 2 or the second 2 of them with a key I believe.

The newer version is 750g heavier. Other than that, specifications look the same.

We can infer any improvements cost $133/kg

      • How do you know they are 'improvements '

  • Get the self-propelled in either old or new model. I've got one and it's great!

New one looks like a grey model.

It also has some red, maybe you need to get your eyes checked?

      But what about your mower?

  • i would get new, close enough in price. i would get old if the new was double the price.

  • I've got the old one and it's great. Would assume there's not many left, so can you def get one still once you decide? I'd get the older and spend the $100 on x3 batteries or a new tool. I don't believe you'll notice the difference, plus save $100

  • There is a big thread about the various options for electric mowers on Whirlpool forums

I had the old one and it broke and they replaced it with the new one (after 4 years! yay for Ozito)

    Benefits of old one
    - mulching plug (as far as I know the new one doesnt have one - certainly doesnt come in the box)
    - can plug in 4 batteries at a time (the new one you plug in 2 batteries only, although there is 'on board' storage for another 2).

The new one seems 'more balanced', easier to turn (perhaps less weight over the front wheels?). Interesting that its actually heavier as it seems lighter. I dont know if its correct but the new one seems to be more power efficient ie the old one I would often run out of power (2 batteries) near to finishing the mowing, the new one I never do. But that might just be slightly different mowing schedules or something at my end.

Otherwise not really any difference I could see. For some reason the catcher seems smaller on the new one but apparently they are both 50L so not sure why that seems to be the case.

Overall I didnt see much difference between them; if you can get the old one for $100 less then I dont think you are missing out on anything and probably getting some benefits (mulching plug etc)

    • Cool. How is the battery life? Will a pair last for 400m2 lawn? Also, is it worth it at $499, would I be better off going for another brand? I am not on any particular platform as this would be my first purchase after buying a house.

      • I dont know how big my lawn is, would be over 300m2 but probably not 400m2, and I can cover the whole lot with 2 x batteries with some spare. However it will depend on your grass type and how often you mow/how long it is (as you are probably aware, if the grass is long/thick it really impacts energy use). I also mow my grass quite high (I live in Canberra so we have different grass to the coastal areas).

One downside I forgot - doesnt cut super long, I think only 80mm length as max. Which is totally fine for kikuyu or buffalo grass, a tad short for bluegrass in my view (although others disagree)

I think if you wanted to ensure you could do the whole lawn in one go then I would buy 2 extra batteries (or if you already have other Ozito gear/batteries, then have them charged). https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/837231

I havent really looked at other brands - when I first bought the mower the only other options were a lot more expensive (Ego, Makita for example) but there are now some other brands such as Ryobi which are comparable specs and price.

If you arent already in a system them its probably a choice between Ozito and Ryobi - they both seem to be pretty equivalent. I'm in the Ozito camp so cant really compare with the Ryobi camp, but Ozito does have an excellent warranty and has virtually all the tools you will need. Plus Ozito have occasional good sales where you can pick up the other tools you will need (drill, sanders, saws etc). You can find discussions around on which system is better

If you want to spend more then Ego seems to be the most highly rated, but end of the day the Ozito cuts the grass just as well.
