Boarding V/Line for Suburban Stations

Just stumbled upon these threads on reddit

I travel almost daily on the Ballarat line to Deer Park. I have seen on daily basis people boarding at Southern Cross and getting off at Footscray and Sunshine and vice versa. But never witnessed anyone getting kicked out or refused to let in. So is this rule only valid on boarding and not getting off?

Also to all those people who get off at Footscray, why board V/Line? I mean there are enough metro lines for this station.

It's not the same as someone getting on at Footscray to get to Southern Cross.

Anyone can do Southern Cross to Sunshine or other stations. From Southern Cross or other stations, Richmond, Flinders Street etc, there isn't a check to be "where are you going?".

Lots of people get on at Flinders Street and get off at Pakenham. Its more express.

Also to all those people who get off at Footscray, why board Vline? I mean there are enough metro lines for this station

Quicker. Because most Metro trains stop all stations. V/Line is a more express.

    • Plus I think VLine have priority over Metro trains on the lines.

The express trains stop between the stations as they catch up to the trains stopping at the stations but cannot overtake them. Either that or they crawl along at a snails pace taking the same amount of time anyway.

What kind of deer are there?

  • It's illegal, but harder to police when you're leaving the city (like, what if you realise you left your wallet in the office and need to go back?). They'd have to have AOs waiting at the suburban station, watching who gets off.

I've heard stories of people being fined for getting on city-bound V-lines at suburban stations - that's definitely a thing.

  • Sometimes I get on at Southern and get off at Clayton since I'm already taking a V/Line to get in I think it's fair you continue your journey on V/Line and not have to deal with confused Metro people not understanding you're allowed to use a V/Line ticket on the metro system
