Victoria Rego and Vehicle Registration

Hi all, hope you're all having a great week so far! Seeking some ideas or guidance.

I have recently (10 days ago) moved to Victoria from Sydney (NSW). Currently, my NSW registration expired last night, and when I reached out to VicRoads, the earliest appointment available is next month, the 18th (already booked).

Which option is better, more viable, and time-saving?

Option 1: Is it better to get registered first in NSW and then transfer to Vic when I attend on the 18th?

Option 2: Is it better to take a UVP (unregistered vehicle permit) so I can buy time until the 18th and avoid renewing the NSW registration and do two things at one go transfer vehicle to Vic & registration?

Also please advise is it mandatory to do roadworthiness before transferring interstate or registering an unregistere vehicle.

Thanks in advance

Cheers

How old is the car? Does it require a pink slip in NSW for rego? If it’s under 5 years and doesn’t need a pink slip, just pay the rego and cancel it later… but you are going to be up for a cancellation fee which may not make it worth it for 18 days…

Option 2 isn’t what you think it is. You can’t just get a UVP and drive around normally, going shopping or going to work, that kind of thing. There are a pretty strict set of rules to getting a UVP and how and when you can use it. It is not a replacement for registering your vehicle.

Also, yes, it is mandatory to do a RWC when transferring registration from NSW to Vic. The up side is that you will not have to pay stamp duty, as you already have paid this when you registered the car in NSW. They can’t slug you with stamp duty for a car you already own.

Great answers but you skipped the best part…

Are you having a great week so far?

    • Thank you for reply!
The car 6 years old..yes it requires pink slip. Tbh i have missed reminded myself to get safety inspection check before departed nsw as it costs only $50 and what i have discoverd this morning $250 to get RWC which i need to upload to nsw and once it is acceptable they'll aĺlow to renew..so pretty expensive process

So UVP isnt replacement for rego…
Please advise any other options do i have here
      Cheers

      • Remove NSW number plates
Purchase a UVP stating Melbourne to Wodonga
Sneak over to Albury in the dark of night
Get your pink slip and pay rego in Albury
        Reattach NSW plates
        Drive back to Melbourne
        Obtain a RWC
Attend VicRoads appointment and pay fees/rego
        Surrender NSW plates
        Install VIC plates
        Winning

By the way - you have to do most of this tomorrow

  • Please advise any other options

Park it and rent a car until the 18th, it'll be more cost effective than paying unreg/uninsured fines …

You won't need a RWC in Vic if transferred into same name, and have 90 days if expired… Just get the uvp for the vicroads appointment.

    • Need a RWC mate to transfer it from another state. C'mon read or be aware of the rules before you comment.

      • You won't need an RWC if the vehicle is currently registered in your name interstate, and is going into the same name in Victoria, AND the interstate vehicle registration is still current (or expired by less than three months)

aware of the rules before you comment.

Great advice.. should follow it 👍

        • Surely that is a new VicRoads policy, defiantly hasn't been that in the past.

  • the earliest appointment available is next month, the 18th (already booked)

Check other VicRoads offices. Sometimes regional locations have earlier appointments.

Its mandatory to get a roadworthy. Park your car (off the street) until the 18th.

  • I’d just look at other Vic Roads locations.
Surely there is something before the 18th. The problem is you also need to notify insurance as you likely aren’t covered if you are unreg. As per above UVP isn’t a rego replacement. It is to drive the car to and from repairs. You can’t use it for shopping etc. It is a long weekend coming up and you will get caught.

I also kinda agree with the Melbourne > Wodonga option. I am not condoning sneaking over as from what I remember it isn’t that close.

However, you might be able to put in Albury as your destination as many hotels are there. That or hire a car trailer and pay someone with a 4x4 $100 to tow your car over the border.
