Good if you want to emulate the sun at night time?

There are places you go where that's needed :P

      • That looks dangerous.

        • Good for kayaking.

  • 150 clams for a torch?

Erm … call me 'old school', but for that kind of money I'd at least expect it to have a few additional features, such as a USBa port and a USBc port so it could act as a powerbank, and a few small fold-out metal appliances (Swiss Army knife-style) such as a blade and a bottle/can opener.

Jeez if this has even half the claimed lumens it'll melt retina's, make ye 'ole Dolphin torch shiver at the knees, or even replace the Old Hella Rally 4000's on the Datsun Sunny!

      • LOLOLOL @ 'Datsun Sunny' … takes me back …

    • Use as a powerbank would be great, if it's possible (this would depend on a few things, including matching voltages, or a voltage converter - which would require a DC to AC converter, step up/down transformer, and an AC to DC converter - plus hardware, firmware, and software for the USB connector).

There is probably a system on a chip (SoC) or IC chip which handles all those functions, but it would add to the cost of production of an already expensive torch, and possibly increase the size, and may require additional cooling.

Anyway, the point is that a powerbank feature would be great, but it may not be practical (I can't be sure because it's been a long time since I've dabbled in electronics).

      • For $150 per unit, believe me, it would be 'possible'.

        • Ha ha, probably, but if it was so easy or cheap, you'd think they'd include it. Unless the company is run by someone pretty incompetent (or if they make or sell powerbanks separately;))

          • @BooYa: There is a large cost involved in 'innovating/changing' an existing product to include multiple new features. Not only the costs of design and testing, but also production, regulatory approval, etc. As it stands now, this particular torch is overpriced compared to other things on the market, because it is 'just a torch'; whereas it could be so much more, without compromising weight of performance much at all.

Maybe the company has the 'new model' in development, and is getting rid of these ones before they release that new/multi-purpose model.

            • @GnarlyKnuckles: You're probably right. I dont go outside much :D so I don't know if they're overpriced.

They certainly seem expensive (but maybe there's a niche market for extremely high Lumen torches with some people willing to pay the premium for max Lumen torches).

      • What are you on about?

Why are you converting DC to AC and back? Buck-boost converters work on DC, a simple fast charger module will handle powerbank features and battery management. You don't need software, it's a dumb charger.

Plenty of flashlight have fast charge capabilities, look at the sofirn q8's, sp36. Alot of even cheap lights have powerbank features, it's not a complicated feature nor is it expensive.

    • Lack of "reverse charging" via USB-C is a bit lame.

However, the X1 is kind of in a sweet spot for price vs sustained output with fan cooling.

There's a big price jump when looking at other fan cooled torches like the Lumintop Mach or Imalent MS12 Mini.

Lumintop Mach has a power bank with USB-A, USB-C and a display hidden under the tailcap.

recommended. great output, battery life, fast charging, built in water proof fan, lock mode, wide flood light

  • I don't know, I haven't looked at the specs properly, but 3,000 Lumen constant current is probably closer to what you'll get.

The description says something about "explosive" power, or something like that, so I suspect that 12,000 Lumens is the peak output (which may be limited to 3,000 Lumens by heat dissipation?).

Also, the Amazon description says it's 2,000 Lumens. That's probably a typo, and it's probably got a great light output, just take the 12,000 Lumens with a grain of salt (and maybe look at some independent reviews or videos before buying).

It does 12k lumens for a minute then steps down a level.

      • That sounds reasonable.

      • +1

This is quite common for lots of torches turbo modes.

I tested it with my amateur test equipment and measured:
      9,189 lm at 30 seconds.
2,318 lm sustained for 2 hours.

There aren't many flooders this size with such sustained output.

Good value for what it is.

IMALENT is probably the next big step up when looking for powerful floodlights.
