Parking Options in Melbourne CBD

I rarely take my car into the city but we need to do this tomorrow around 12 till around 4.

Any tips for inexpensive parking, especially one where I can book ahead?

Or…… something free on the edge of the free tram zone?

Cheers team 😁

If you can take the tram from the end of the free tram zone, why can't you take it from further away?

    Maybe take the train even?

    • Because the cost of the myki itself ($6 - if someone doesn't already have one) and the fares (assuming 'round trip', is >$10) will probably be more expensive than a day of parking. Especially if there's more than one person.

QV Parking (Lonsdale, Russell, Swanston and Little Lonsdale are the surround streets) in the middle of the city is $20 all day if you spend a $1 anywhere inside.

Cost me $25 for parking last night from 7.30 to 10pm.

Day time rates are much higher.

About the only place to get cheap parking, depending on what day you want to go, is Queen Vic Markets.

Nah, QV Shopping centre is $20 all day if you spend $1. It's Monday to Friday only. There's 1 and 2 hour free too, if you spend $30 and $60 at particular stores.

          https://www.qv.com.au/visit, under "Parking Offers"

The offer has been there for at least the last 6-7 years since I've lived upstairs (it was previously $19).

Cost me $25 for parking last night from 7.30 to 10pm.

That could've been $15 at QV Shopping Centre. Their night rate is $15 flat from 5pm to 6am.

      • Myki fares are capped at $10.60 a day.

Dunno if OP is new to Melbourne, but parking at the train station and training in is a pretty common thing to do. Usually easier than trying to drive into QV too.

        • …capped at $10.60 a day

It is, but that's a per person cap IF they already have a myki card. Otherwise add $6 each. So for each person, this trip could be up to $16.60 each.

Im not against public transport or anything, but they definitely don't make it easy or worthwhile.

Those that might park at the station are usually regular commutors. OP says it's a 'once in a while trip' so it's probably cheaper and easier to just drive.

          • @bobbified: If you have an Android phone with NFC, then a digital Myki via Google Wallet doesn't cost any extra.

The next Myki contract is meant to have debit/credit card payments enabled, but who knows how far off that is.

  • Tomorrow is a normal work day, so you either pay by the hour at the multi-levels, or maybe down St Kilda Rd for a few hours

    • $20 All Day Parking Monday – Friday!

Spend $1 at any QV store, request a parking discount ticket and your parking will be capped at $20 all day (Monday to Friday only).*

When you reach the ticket pay station located on Level B1, insert your original ticket, followed by the discount ticket and your parking will be automatically discounted to $20. Or visit the car park office on Level B1 for assistance.

*$20 all day parking is redeemable when you enter the car park between 6am and 5pm and exit before 6am the following day.

      Jewels

  • Park at harbour Town docklands. It's 12 dollars I think. But you have to park before 10 AM and out after 3 PM

QV. $20 all day parking, if you buy something >$1 eg Woolies / BIGW.

  • $18 all day at Docklands and the free tram takes you into the city.

    • and the free tram takes you into the city

All the trams are free in the city…

      • Docklands is a tad out of the central Hoddle grid.

          • @jv: Yup,
This is the Hoddle grid. Docklands is an extension.

              This is the Hoddle grid.

That is not the free tram zone.

and WT is 'Telstra Dome' ?????

You are still living a quarter of century ago…

              • @jv: I didn’t say it wasn’t in the free tram zone. I said it wasn’t in the Central Hoddle grid, which it isn’t. The Central Hoddle grid has been around for well over a century so what something is called within it is irrelevant. The important thing is the border streets that define it.

I ended up booking with a Wilson lot for $19. Less stuffing around. Thanks all for your input!

    • Have a fun day in Melbourne.

  • Part of where your parking fee goes to
    https://www.sro.vic.gov.au/calculate-your-levy-private-car-p…

The city is in the Category 1 levy area thats $1690 per lot per year. So each parking lot has generate at least $4.63 per day to not make a loss.
