Floor Plans Walkthrough to Scale - Is It Worth It?

Hi All,

Has anyone visited Bigplans Melbourne to walk through their floor plan before signing the building contract? Do you think it's worth it?

Costs we have been advised are $349 for 30 minutes and $700 for 1 hour.

It was free to walk through a display home in the past and use your imagination for alterations to the floor plan.

  • Ours is a custom build !

    • Then probably worth it.

  • Build it out in Sims

      Minecraft it.

    Buy two 30 minute sessions.

Have you considered buying some Lego and building a 3D model to your hearts content. Some of the older Lego "houses" had lots on wall, window and roof bricks. A few of the selected new houses for a 1 hour outlay would be more than sufficient.

Take a stack of beer coasters and a tape measure down the park and save $349

  • Here's me visualising off of old fashioned building plans… 🤦‍♀️😒

The shrink ray they use to get you that small has to be worth $700, I'd give it a go.

Just post your plans here and you will get a heap of feedback for free!

  • i recommend constructing a scale model using lego to get an idea of whether it is suitable

A flat area with lines on the ground will not feel the same as a 3D environment with walls, windows, doors, ceilings (let alone furniture).

I personally wouldn't bother, unless the dimensions are vastly different to what you are used to. e.g. Hong Kong style apartment vs McMansion.
If your existing dwelling has comparable sized rooms, you can probably use your imagination - "the new living room will be the same width as this one but a metre longer" etc.

Everyone has different spatial reasoning abilities. If you think it sounds like a good idea for you, then it most likely is!

    • I initially thought it would be a VR walk-through and I understood that selling proposition. But this thing just projects the floor plans onto the ground? I don't reckon you can get a proper feel for the size of rooms without walls and ceilings (eg high ceilings can make a room feel way larger than an equally-sized room with lower ceilings).

There's no way I'd pay for this service. What does it achieve?

      • I agree.

I went to their website and they do have some partitions and other objects to move into place to give a better impression, but it's not full height and not the real ceiling so yeah, not worth it for me.

If you can't visualise it using plans then it's worth it.

  • does that include how the sun affects your build on it orientation?

  • Having built a house 4 yrears ago id definitly do, missed a couple of things something like this would have picked up & we could have adjusted.

  • Might give you a better idea of room sizes, but so would a tape measure and some marks on the ground. Maybe go to the local park with a bunch of tent pegs and a roll of surveyors tape. Then compare your new room sizes with an existing space somewhere, be that display home or even a friends house.

A smaller space on the floor markings but without surrounding walls or futniture will always feel bigger than an actual space.

I would see this as a waste of money. A VR representation would be better IMO as itll give you a feel for 3D rather than just lines on the ground.

use a can of spray paint on the grass in the middle of a park, it will give you time to think about the layout :)

      • $5 for a can of high vis paint washes out in water. I'd go to a new estate with a similar size block for fences etc
