Dashcam Mostly for Parking Mode/Sentry Mode

Hi All
A few long stories short, I have had 4 incidents with my car being bumped in a parking lot over the years. With all the incidents I been unable to identify the responsible party and ended up paying for repairs each time.

In the past I have done a bit research on the best dashcams but never followed through with one.

Currently I have a CX-60 PHEV, I would like some advice on the best dashcam for parking mode/sentry mode, without causing battery issues(apparently PHEV's can be an issue). I have no issue having the dashcam hardwired.

Thanks

  • You realise that it will only show out the front windscreen and rear window if you get a 2 camera one?

    • +1

Yup, any video footage of an incident would be more helpful than none

You will need 4 cameras or

    Park someplace where it’s isolated

  • without causing battery issues

See this comment (or search hardwire kit on OzBargain to find similar)

Basically ensure that for whatever Dashcam you choose, you also buy (or have included) a hardwire kit that has a cut off setting.

  • In the US there are several dashcams marketed as Tesla alternatives. Brands may not be well known here, but we can access 180º models suited to hardwiring.

  • I have a Viofo A119 that is hard wired. Probably about $200 all up installed

  • Recommend Viofo also. 2 camera model hard wired. Caught me a hit and run Parker with it.

    • How do you argue it was him because side is not visible ? Front and back makes sense

  • Use a battery pack like Cellink NEO with your dashcam if you're worried about the vehicle's battery.

  • Don't know about PHEV, but for a regular ICE car, I invertedly have the set up you're after, on multiple cars, they aren't perfect though.

    Car 1:
I installed an aftermarket(Chinese) birdeye view set up for parking, it has 4 cameras, one at the front grill, one under each side mirror, and a rear camera, like an OEM set up, but unlike most OEM setups which doesn't record(except for tesla), this one does record.

Con for this is that it was a real pain to install, having to install and route 4 camera, if you're hiring someone else to do it, then it will be very expensive. It's interface is quite clunky. Recorded footage is a fisheye circle, hard to view unless you have some sort of software to convert it to flat video.

    Car 2:
I found a Japanese dashcam maker which has a 360 degree dashcam product. It has a fisheye cam that you mount onto the front windscreen pointing down, this allows it to see in front like a regular dashcam would, but then also see the cabin, and also through your other windows to see all around. the one I have also has another rear camera for a clear view of the rear.

Con of this is that it's only for the japanese market, so you need to figure out how to get it here, all the menu and software to view the footage on your computer is all in Japanese as well. GPS location is locked in Japan area, so most time it shows you driving in the sea(but this wouldn't matter for park recording). You will also need to purchase an additional wiring harness if you want it hard wired, the wires that comes with it ends with a cigarette light socket.

Con for both set up is that the devices will power down after about an hour, to save the car's battery from going flat(I may have set the voltage limit too high).
