The Empire Gudgeon, an Australian native species, is a suitable addition to medium to large aquariums.

Currently measuring at 4 cm but reaching an adult size of 12 cm, this species thrives on a diet of regular tropical foods, given its omnivorous nature.
Maintaining a recommended temperature range of 12-28°C, they typically live for 3-5 years within aquarium environments. Female Empire Gudgeons exhibit hues ranging from brown to golden with whitish underbellies, while males undergo a striking transformation during breeding season, displaying bright orange-red coloration on their head and belly. Their dorsal and anal fins become vibrant red-orange, adorned with dark sub-marginal stripes and lighter margins.

Outside of breeding season, they resemble their female counterparts, presenting a less flamboyant appearance.

    As they get older not really unfortunately. These are bottom feeders, so forrage and eat from the bottom of the tank.
