iPad 4 GPU Performance Analyzed

I just come across an article about the A6X Chip that powers the Ipad 4. It helps me to understand why Ipad's overall performance is smooth from a more technical perspective.

Note: I am only listing the fact.

Just my 2 cents.

  • Where's your 2 cents? :)

Looks like Apple got a winner there with PowerVR SGX544MP4. According to Wikipedia, PowerVR technology can be licensed SoC builders — TI, Samsung and Freescale are amongst the licensees (other ARM builders). My question is — what stops other companies to integrate the latest SGX into their SoC?

    • Cost factor I suppose. :-)

I was just reading through some of the comments on the above article, and one person summed up the possibilities quite well. The most likely possibilities are; Apple and PowerVR signs exclusivity deals for the latest and greatest (all the more likely, considering Apple is pretty much a massive and guaranteed customer for the PowerVR GPU's); or PowerVR charges a great amount to license, or is selective in licensing the drivers for their GPU's (the wiki document mentioned circuitry designs and patents, but not specific drivers and entire units).

Hopefully we'll see some PowerVR action in some Android tablets (possibly with the upcoming 6 (Rogue) Series GPUs). Either that, or the Mali-T658 in the Exynos 5 Quad had better be a damned sight better than the T604 in the Exynos 5 Dual.
For a company that produces some of the fastest desktop GPU's on the planet, NVIDIA is doing a dismal job with the Tegra's.

      • Indeed Tegra has been quite disappointing. Back in the late 90's my friend had one of the first gen PowerVR and those are just crap comparing to 3dfx Voodoo's and Nvidia TNT's at that time. You'll think Nvidia would have the know-how to dominate this market…

I see you couldn't wait until an android deal was posted. :p

Impressive as it is you might be better off waiting a few months for the iPad 5.

    • ROFL… why stop at 5 why not 8,9,10 or 11.

Maybe all vendors need to stop developing new features…

Better still maybe there should be a law that says if you introduce a product you cant introduce another for 12 months.

Then we would see some gamesmanship with all vendors, waiting to see what the other would do before announcing a product, so they can get an advantage for 12 months.
