Mobile Mechanics for Logbook - Any Experiences?

I've found a mechanic on AutoGuru that's cheaper than my dealership and thinking about doing my next logbook service with them.

However, it's a mobile mechanic. From a convenience point of view, this actually works out better as I can work from home that day. But I've never used a mobile mechanic - any one got experiences - where do they normally do the service? I've got a garage but it might be a little crammed - it's not very deep. Would they generally be able to work on the street or the nature strip? If it rains would they need to cancel?

Also, can they usually do a good enough job given they won't have as many tools as if they were working from a garage?

  • If its a logbook service its just going to be oil + filters generally. Very few specialty tools needed unless its booked for a major, in which case they would probably prefer to do it in a shop anyway.

  • Why do you need a logbook?
    Is it still under warranty?
How much savings are you expecting vs just going to a nearby mechanic shop/ or near a mall while you shop or company dealer?

I don't think they will work under a car on the street, nature strip is a small possibility if it was safe and level enough

    • +1

It may just be me, however when buying a used vehicle I always look for complete and up to date log books otherwise I don't touch it.

      • Log book is not a big issue for me for an older car. If its there, good. If not, the condition of the car etc is just as important.

  • I had a mobile mechanic visit a few times. Our old place he preferred to park the car up the end of the dead end street to work on it. No culdesac, just a road that stopped so he wasnt blocking the road. The driveway wasnt flat and garage too small. Only stopped using him because he went back to a workshop on the other side of town.

Generally theyll want a flat space they can move around easily so a small garage isnt ideal. Ive seen some using a portable gazebo for shade.

Check with your mechhnic before making the booking, they may want to visit and check where they can work if you dont have a relatively flat driveway.
