Mobility Parking Pass

Hi.. I am 71 and have a mobility blue card which I have had almost five years which expires in five days.

I was given the card as I had severe osteoarthritis in both knees. Nine months ago, I had one knee replacement. One month ago, I had surgery on that same knee as it was found there were many things that had gone wrong. Patellar was put back in place and tendon tear stitched. My previous doctor has left the practice so for six months I have been seeing a new GP.

This GP will only give me a temporary pass even though I am needing to use crutches and recovery on that knee is expected to be longer than six months. After experiencing nine months of pain, I am not going to have the other knee done. So, I will still have severe osteo in the right knee.

This means going back to GP every six months and I am told by Services Australia I won't be issued with another mobility card for two weeks.

Can anyone give me advice on what can I do so I am not left for two weeks not able to use disability parking. I am surprised they don't give out temporary card to cover this period.

    Where I live I don't think permits ever get checked and there's so much misuse it seems nobody cares. Where you live, can you risk displaying an expired permit?

    • So you are advising them to break the law?

        I break the law multiple times every single day.

          Doesn't mean you should encourage others to be criminals.

            @jv: That's a bit harsh… we're not exposed to criminal statutes.

              @sumyungguy: They are 71 and not yet a statue…

    Don't drive for two weeks?

    Also where I live, there are GPs who hand out these passes willingly as it costs them nothing and makes for satisfied customers. I know permit holders with disabilities so deeply hidden as to render them fully able. But at least they can get all the good parking bays.

  • Not having a shot at you but why did you wait till only 5 days are left? I would go back to the GP telling him you will report him for malpractice.

    I would apply for the 6 months blue card and keep using the old one till the new one arrives. The chance of you being booked is miniscule.

    • The chance of you being booked is miniscule.

      Thus is true, especially if you 'look disabled'. Crutches should be good so noone is inspired to complain

    Its up to the GP for what they will give you.

    Fair enough, I guess you'll be going there anything for other knee related things.

    Honestly most people won't check the dates on the disability parking permit.

    Surely for 2 weeks you can limit your driving or get someone else to drive you.

  • At 71 probably wouldn't hurt to see a GP at least every six months anyway.

  • Try another doctor. Sounds silly after all these years to then get a temporary pass.

  • How much are you driving in this period? Some people with disability use the parents with prams spots if disabled parking is not available.

  • Which state are you in? It's not the GP's decision in WA, the form asks objective questions about the condition, whether you use stick/crutches/frame, whether any treatment is likely to improve the symptoms etc. ACROD then decides what type of permit you get.

    Is the GP saying that you will be fully mobile within 6 months each time the application is submitted? That's the only way this could happen in WA.

  • The GP has to tick if a review is needed and whether permanent or temporary. I ticked permanent GP ticked temporary. She baulked at signing the forms 2 weeks prior. I supplied scans saying i have severe osteo in both knees done in Feb 23. I have since had one unsuccessful knee replacement which physiotherist estimates will take 6 months of physio before i can walk unaided. After the pain and stress with the knee replacement i have decided its not worth having the other one done. I have back issues and this has left me with more backpain. I had spinal fractures 20 years ago. Its frustrating.

    • Aah that sucks. It's clear you'll always need a walking aid of some sort and be a risk to yourself and others if you had to walk through traffic across a 200m car park, I wouldn't hesitate to tick the box that this is permanent.

    71 with knee issues…. STAY OFF THE ROADS.

    I have a letter from orthopaedic surgeon giving me permission to drive. I might add I drive an automatic vehicle and had left knee replacement.
