Sony Bravia - 6 Flashing Red Lights

Hi OZB's,

My beloved 65" Sony Bravia KDL-65W850C appears to died on the weekend. When I went to turn it on I got a black screen and 6 flashing red lights which after a quick search looks like a power failure issue. I have tried a few different troubleshoot options like switching it off at the powerpoint and holding in the power button but none have worked so far.

I purchased it in 2016 from JB and took out extended warranty but that expired in 2022. In saying that do I have any options with JB to get something out of this or no chance?

Assuming I am going to have to replace my Tv unit, what would you recommend in the 75-85 inch range. I did see the TCL C845 75" have a great deal last week but that promo has finished unfortunately. Budget is $2750 max

Thanks in advance.

Benny

Did you try turning it off and on again?

PS: on a serious note, sorry OP.

    • Yes tried that, I haven't tried doing a factory reset as I can't turn the tv on to get a display but I will find out how to do via the back of the tv.

  • You could try making a claim on the basis of ACL, however, you’d need to make a judgement on what a ‘reasonable time’ is for a TV to last.

8 years may be pushing it for ACL

      • Mid-high range TVs should last 8-11 years. Source

        • Well fair enough then

        • Choice has come up with estimates

Yeah, that doesn't mean much. Good luck arguing that with manufactures.

how do you feel about swapping out a power board? https://www.ebay.com.au/itm/176240215322 otherwise sell it on ebay to someone else who is willing

actually alternate listing says: PLEASE READ - If your TV's red stand-by light is flashing 6 times repeatedly then your backlight LED's have failed - VERY common issue for this model. Please DO NOT buy this item as it will not fix your issue.

  • same thing happened to my sony 45 inches a few months back.. paid a mechanic to test it he said power issues and not worth fixing it plus parts wont be available… had to get new tv

A blinking red light 6 times is an error code mainly indicating the backlight failure

you can buy the replacement LED strips for ~$50 delivered on aliexpress

    • it would be cost effective to buy an used TV in some cases though, but for 65" it could be still cheaper to replace the backlight.

  • Sony Bravia - 6 Flashing Red Lights

Wait for the 6 flashing green lights.

Of course you've got a chance. Even though it expired in 2022, it should really cover you until 2100.

Sony has a habit of offering discounts if you complain your TV broke when it shouldn't have.

I'd contact Sony Support demanding repair but knowing it probably won't happen.

I have seen other post where people were offered 20-30% off a new model.

  • Older Sony TV's are generally easy to fix as all the boards are separate.
I fixed my own Bravia KDL46W3100 for a $100 part which was a TV tuner not working which prevented Tv turning on. It was as simple as opening TV swapping the parts by removing screws and connector cables.
TV has now been going for about 15 years in total 3+ since the fix.
I purchased my part from mxmee tv parts which is reliable.
