Need a New Medium SUV under $100k

Help me find a medium suv. Medium suv is 5-seater family car and 4.6-4.7m length max.

My criteria is:
Has to retain its value somewhat.
Has to be economic of fuel, I don’t want too many trips to station. I can’t see the value in phev, extra $20k would never break even, so thats a no.
I am thinking of lexus nx or rx,
Or mercedes benz glc, but this is not hybrid.
Or bmw x3.

Keen to try ev, but fearful of the price plummet to nothing in just a few years.
I don’t have solar panel.

I don’t mind used cars 1-2 yo.

Preferably not Chinese made cars.

its very bentley looking (well they took lot of designers from there). my friend has one and he whole heartedly agrees. the only downsides is when driving and parking its definitely on the wide side but he says you get used to it. its so comfortable for everyone inside since its wide and even the back seats recline a bit.

    • A fine choice, but owners wanting to appear wealthy & successful won't touch a Hyundai

      • +1

"owners wanting to appear wealthy & successful" = "(profanity)"

        Their loss.

      • Hence why they stuck a genesis badge on it, which in itself is written small on some models with wings to look like a bentley or something

    Toyota bZ4X - All electric AWD - $80k

    • Terrible suggestion. See Doug Demuro's most recent video where he considers this one of the absolute worst vehicles on sale today.

This has to be a troll post.

  • My next car could be the Tank 500 ultra, that car/truck have everything I need :)

I was gonna say Genesis GV80, famous for saving Tiger Woods’ life. But it’s $115k+…

Op said 2nd hand is fine. 2021 models are under 100K and this would be a good recommendation.

Seems to hold its value well too.

I NEED to blow $100,000.00 on a car that I NEED so I NEED to tell everyone about it. This brag is not so humble.

  • I think you got the title of this post wrong. Should have mentioned you are looking to get a luxury SUV.

Keeping that in mind and for slightly better value than the Germans, I would suggest Lexus RX.

Note, regardless what you buy (for around $100k), you will lose value. You are buying a depreciating asset.

    Google.

  • Landrover Defender P300. A used could be obtained for under 100k. Since 2022, they all come with 5 year warranty

  • Best economical & value retaining SUV - 2ndhand BYD Atto3

    • can probably get this one for 40k:
      https://www.carsales.com.au/cars/details/2022-byd-atto-3-ext…

..batteries make up something like 80% of the value of the car, and since the blade batteries barely degrade (4500 cycles with minimal degradation), should retain it's value better than most cars (granted.. bigger, better batteries always around the corner)

    • -1

Economical yes - but both EVs and Chinese cars so far have demonstrated they generally plummet in value when they get older

      • Didn't neg you, but some examples of proof please?
E.g. teslas still selling for 80% of their original value 5years on..

        • Tesla's are a bit unique - that has been happening because they have been quite smart in that they haven't updated the models substantially, so old ones still look new, and in part due to their growing pains in their supply chain and covid, it made these things seem prestigious and rare / hard to get so used held their value. Tesla are good marketers in an unusual way that they have created a cult icon following, owning one is about more than having a car, there's a whole market of early adopter tech heads that want them for all the tech features, and a whole separate following of rich environmentalists that want to engage in virtue signalling postering that want one as the ideal EV / tech status symbol. However now that EVs are becoming more mainstream, and they continue to age, that novelty is going to wear off… especially as more manufacturers make more high tech EVs with self drive features etc but with better build quality from a traditional car manufacturer - however I'm not talking about that, mainly talking about other cheap EVs, like the MGs, BYD's, etc flooding the market.

As for proof, here - see these links, there are plenty more:

          https://www.drive.com.au/caradvice/used-electric-car-prices-…

5-7 years of an ICE car = 68.8% of original value vs 24.1% for Electric

Also takes nearly twice as long to sell.

Also see this on Chinese made cars:
          https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vy39EaTNQiY

          Examples from elsewhere as well:

If you're looking for badge approval from others, then stick to BMW, Mercedes or maybe the Lexus (Lexus less so for the badge I guess, but objectively the best car of the 3, same basis as everyone recommending Toyota)

If you're actually looking for what you said, and just want something 'nice' for yourself then I have some alternatives.
Hyundai Ioniq 5 - EV, Stands out from the crowd, don't think anyone really cares its a Hyundai tbh
Genesis GV70 - More luxury (and possibly performance) than the Euros at price point, styling stands out
Alfa Romeo Stelvio - Similar to the big 3 Euros, but stands out a bit (and nicer to drive)
Volvo XC60 - Scandi Styling, classy
Mazda CX60 - Mazdas are generally pretty nice, and the 60 series are even nicer - could just buy a CX5 instead though, much like others have suggested with the Rav4/Lexus argument
Porsche Macan S - Would have to be slightly used for under $100k, best driving out of pretty much all the SUVs (which is admittedly low bar)

As others have said, cars depreciate, and luxury cars more than most. Either extreme in demand mainstream cars like the Toyota Hybrids/Dual cabs, or enthusiast vehicles (Jimny, anything with more than 4 cylinders is a decent bet as they're a dying breed), are about the only ones to not tank horrendously. Also worth noting, at the end of the day, they're all family SUVs, and if you paint em white, most people couldn't tell them apart from the outside.

Get Solar and a battery -_-
Buy a hybrid or similar for fuel economy if it's high on your list, will also help retain value to an extent.
Avoid a SUV if you can, although the market is beyond saturated at this point(sigh). However look at things like wagons perhaps? Think maybe Skoda or other even? SUV's are a false econmy for the better part in terms of selling you 'more' car but you get no actual gain in internal cabin size due to larger wheel arches encroaching, economy( bigger box and more wieght), leg room etc etc etc… but people froth for the marketing.

OR just do you and burn your cash on a badge(meh, no one really cares), I'm thinking you will do the latter and TBH you will just be another schmo doing another boring thing like all the others at this point… my Monday 2 cents :D enjoy your committee designed medocrity whatever it may be.

    g'luck

  • Base model Y under a novated lease.
EVs are almost at peak discount, sure there will be cheaper ones but different from today’s.

    Cars are not investments.
Past is not a prediction on the future.
Many predict ICE cars will depreciate faster, commencing 2026. Look overseas, they are like smokers/outcasts in many countries already. Sure it will take a lot longer here, only matter of when not if.

    • Except that maintained 15+ year old ICE cars can run fine, there are plenty of 2009 era cars on the road - 15+ year old EVs have a battery / range problem.
That makes them in theory depreciate quicker as lifespan is the key factor.
Agree in theory if we were all jumping on EV and fuel becomes and expensive outcast…. but with the distances to cover for travel in Australia, will it happen here… not so sure, and agree certainly not as quickly as Europe.

The converse argument, like Mr Toyoda argues, is there is a whole lot of the world that will not go EV. We focus on the EU, lots of middle America, and certainly huge parts of the middle east, africa, russia, India etc aren't going to rely on a new network of EV superchargers to get around - so ICE isn't disappearing from the world that fast - we will be somewhere in the middle because of everything outside of Sydney and Melbourne CBD.

      https://www.drive.com.au/news/akio-toyoda-ev-only-30-per-cen…

"However, one billion people around the world live in areas without electricity. In the case of Toyota, we also supply vehicles to these regions, so a single [battery-electric vehicle] option cannot provide transportation for everyone," he said in the translated speech.

"That's why I try to have a variety of options [within Toyota's line-up]."

"Japan has its own way of doing things. I don't think the correct answer is to try to imitate the West in everything. I believe that if we continue to be chosen by the market and customers, the future will definitely change."

      • Toyota Chairman Akio Toyoda
  • Nissan X-Trail e-Power Hybrid. Whilst not as fancy as a Lexus NX, many say it drives better.

  • Mazda CX-60 PHEV

Before you cut out the PHEV option, if you have access to salary sacrafice then a Mazda CX-60 PHEV may well be the car for you. The current tax concession means that PHEV's below the Luxury Car Tax (LCT) threshold are Fringe Benefits Tax exempt. That means you'll pay substancially less for the Mazda CX-60 PHEV than the petrol or diesel powered equivilants on a Novated Lease.

The Mazda CX-60 PHEV has great looks (BMW X series proportions), luxurious interior and equipment, impressive performance and economy and has no worries with range anxiety and crappy public charging infrastructure availability.

    You'll need :

    • Access to Salary Sacrafice for a Novated Lease
    • Off street parking with access to a standard power outlet
    • Be travelling < 60km on a normal day (to drive the car as a pure EV and run very cheaply and quietly)

Make sure you take the Mazda CX-60 for a long drive over a variety of roads as Mazda have gone for sporty with the handling and transmission and it's not to everyones liking. If you bargain hard with the dealer you may get the top Azami model (including accessories) for under the LCT; don't go a dollar over the LCT though or you'll be liable for the full FBT payable. Check with a financial consultant if it's unclear.

If you meet the conditions and you like the car, then over 5 years you'll pay back the around the sticker price of the car but you'll have all expenses including registration, insurance, maintainance and fuel included. A deal almost too good to be true, thanks Austrailian Goverment.

    • they don't work just rich so they don't / can't salary sacrifice

besides the whole CX range is non practical for storage…. sure mechanically good but not pratical… very small boot and leg room compared to others that are same size

    • Just wanted to share two quotes from the 12 month test of the CX-60 on TGUK.

"We started out with a petrol 2.5-litre plug-in hybrid, and replaced it with this old school diesel. That was a good call, as the hybrid version never felt quite sorted. The gearbox, hybrid motor and engine often busied themselves with marital breakdowns resulting in some embarrassing jerky driving. Even jerkier when you factored in the bouncy, unsettled ride."

"Sadly the tech that is festooned into the CX-60 did dent some of its lofty ‘premium’ aspirations. The adaptive cruise control was far too sensitive, the driver alert monitor constantly bonged at me if I looked away from the road for the slightest of moments to do some urgent parenting, and I simply ended up switching off the i-Stop system, as it was just annoying."

There's a few other niggles too, but it's a compelling proposition nonetheless.

  • OP, If you're looking for badge approval from others, then stick to Mercedes or BMW.
I've seen many Lexus cars as taxi's now-a-days. You won't get bragging rights with Lexus. The group/friend circle who you want to impress will say it's a fancy Toyota. No winning there.

If you are going to get a Lexus, go for RX. Have a look at Lexus RX 350h 2WD. The Driveaway Price in Melbourne is $100,875. You can haggle and get it around your magic figure of $100,000

Volvo XC60 with T6 engine is reliable and goes fast too, reckon this is not available anymore.
I've heard Porsche Cayman is reliable too and you can get a used one under 100k.
Get a Tesla Model Y performance and that's gets you a supercar performance of 0-100 km/h in 3.7 sec.

I'm really surprised that there aren't more recommendations for the Mazda CX60… It's a beautiful car and fantastic drivetrain! I have been looking at German SUVs and honestly now leaning towards the CX60 or 90, they really are that good.

I think the genesis is really good value. Have a look at that.
https://www.carsales.com.au/cars/details/2022-genesis-gv80-2… here is a gv80. If you want smaller go gv70.
But resale value doesn't correlate with fuel economy.
https://www.carsales.com.au/cars/details/2021-bmw-x3-m40i-g0… this m40 will hold it's value well but is not good fuel economy.
I prefer BMW over Lexus and Mercedes. But if you are going Mercedes again something like glc43 amg
    https://www.carsales.com.au/cars/details/2021-mercedes-benz-…
Lexus you can get a much more newer model for same price.
Here is 2021 model for at least 10k less than BMW and Merc

  • Tesla Model Y

  • Tesla Model Y hands down.

I never hear it talked about but they have a "Fart" button that can be remotely triggered from your phone while watching the 360 degree cameras.

It plays a random fart from a large selection on its external speakers, hang out at the pub with a few beers and wait for a group of people to pass the car - then bang, watch them look at each other with suspicion as they wonder who in the group soiled their pants.

couples walking back from a great night at the restaurant, then bam, pleasant memories replaced by memories of the time they sharted.

This feature alone is worth $90,000

  • Current gen Rav4 Hybrid Cruiser is the ducks nuts for value and tech. No regerts

    • Thoughts on 2WD vs AWD?

    • how long did you have to wait to get it?

  • -2

Trying to impress the other parents at school drop off, OP?

Edit: sorry, didn't mean to be rude. But if you spent <$50k on a car you'd have a spare $50k to put toward an asset that can actually appreciate. If you're actually affluent, go ahead with a luxury car though. I just see too many people paying too much for cars in proportion to what they earn.

    • +1

I don't get these comments. OP wasn't asking whether they should or shouldn't buy one, that decision has seemingly been made, hence them asking which one to pick out of the options provided..

  • +1

If resale value is your biggest issue then just buy a used car for 10k and minimise the exposure to depreciation.

  • OP. Why dont you have solar? If you can get it you should really buy a $90k car and get that big arse solar system on there. If you cant get solar because its impossible Id recommend a Hybrid car. I own a BYD atto3 and filling the car up with sun is a great middle finger to Saudi Arabia !

As for the car, I have read the articles about EV's not retaining their value used and thought "hey I can get a used Kia EV6 or Hyundai Ioniq 5 cheap!" Nope. Those articles are lies in Australia at least with a 50,000kms Kia/Hyundai costing almost as much as new..

    • -1

I think you mean middle finger to South Korea which gets most of their oil from Saudi Arabia

and Atto 3 is too cheap and yuck for OP they indicated and they anti China

      • Do they pay Saudi Arabia with hugs and kisses? Its a middle finger with extra steps!

        • I think they get the whip or stoned in Saudi Arabia for hugs and kisses

      • yes I didnt suggest the Atto 3 to OP due to their snootyness. Finding a car without most of its bits made in China will be difficult.

        • Does your atto 3 side mirrors both close at the same time or a slight delay one after the other?

Also did you get any cashback from byd?

          • @Poor Ass: I never noticed any mirror oddness but its the wifes car. I dont get to time the mirror !

No cahsbacks. Just the FBT free lease saving 37% less about half that the damn lease company takes (so save ~15%).

    • I think the depreciation issue is more towards the premium vehicles - which comes as no surprise really, premium luxury vehicles have always depreciated faster than cheaper models, more to lose and all that I guess.. Teslas are the worst hit with the depreciation stick.

  • Toyota LandCruiser

    • I would agree to this, but thats not even close to a mid SUV

      • maybe the 2 door Land Cruiser Prado

        • I think the landcruiser 76 gxl is really the answer that will address his concerns for holding value, not too big compared to 200/300 series etc and just a nice work vehicle, but its as far from the luxury side as you can imagine lol.
Anyway its probably going to be my next purchase.

  • +2

The new 2024 Prado that's about to be released in Kakadu spec would be my choice, it's a proper 4wd, has a heap of kit, it'll be reliable and will hold it's value.

Don't waste your time on electric, luxury or euro vehicles if resale is important to you.

    • Oooh that is a nice car.. might switch to this over the 76

  • When you've said that you want it to retain value, that immediately cancels out any euro brand.

BMW, Mercedes, Audi, Volvo - all depreciate very quickly after 5 years. Servicing gets more expensive after the warranty is done and dusted. When you buy these on the used market, you are effectively buying a whole bunch of problems, which is why a lot of people get them through novated leasing, but it's a sham. Yes, it drives nicer, it feels nicer, but there is such a premium and it is so fleeting, that it doesn't seem worth it for most.

There is a difference in how people value the driving experience and the look. Ozbargain is going to attract a lot of people who are very utilitarian. That's the nature of this website.

If you want reliability, then it is either Toyota, Lexus or Mazda. I would also look at the Genesis for that luxury hyundai feel.

If you just want a car where you can pretend that you are better than everyone else, then just get a BMW or a Mercedes. Just remember though, get rid of the car after 5 years or after the warranty fails, do not miss any servicing, and move onto the next model asap.

Just buy the car that you want to enjoy mate.

    • I tend to go against the ozb grain when it comes to cars as I am an enthusiast and I just want to say that my C class mercedes from 2008 is without a doubt the best car I have ever had the pleasure of daily driving, and I work with 2020+ model toyotas and nissans at work.

Dont fall into the tropey pitfalls of assuming every european vehicle out there is problematic and if you buy a used one you are going to pay a fortune to keep it on the road. Drop the tropes and focus on individual vehicles, focus on service history, the owner, the condition of the individual vehicle and the older it is the more information is available to you as a buyer on the internet, common problems, things to look out for etc etc. With this information you can seek out a relatively reliable vehicle.

Lastly, you should not be missing any servicing or maintenance issues on any vehicle. Sure Toyota will put up with a missed service or two, but that threshold is getting smaller and smaller as time goes on, engines get more complicated and emissions standards keep going up. I certainly wouldn't recommend missing servicing on a hyundai group product, they are as temperamental as european cars can be with negligent ownership.

      • As a faily, persoanlly find an IS/GS to be top notch. Very well made with a trusted 2GR.

  • Lexus RX doesn’t have real leather on seats. I’m not sure why so many posts are praising Lexus RX for quality interior. It’s pretty ordinary from a luxury car perspective.

Supplies are pretty good which might bring prices down by Q4. I would recommend to wait till November.

  • Lexus NX is what you are looking for under your criteria.
