Need a Mattress for People with Neck and Back Problems

Interested in one of the mattress trials.

I need a mattress that can help with with back and neck pain.

There are several different companies that offer mattress trials.

I am looking for suggestions and recommendations from people that have neck/back pain and have managed to find a mattress that will actually offer you a better sleep.

Queen size mattress.

Thank you. Maybe loot n plunder is the solution.

      Already doing that.

Permanent wear and tear back and neck issues.

      • Definitely go see a Chiropractor to help fix the problem.

        But to answer your question…

Most firm mattresses will do the job.

Try Ecosa, Emma or a Koala mattress
You order online and they come with a 100 -120 day trial period.
You can also check the reviews before choosing one.
If you are not happy just return the mattress for a full refund

If you find these mattresses expensive be aware that returned mattresses (after trial) can often be found at the Salvos Op shops for a fraction of the new price.

    • I've started obeying my Apple Watch when it tells me it's time to stand up. Still haven't worked on completing the fitness rings tho :(

    • Or working too hard and doesn't get breaks, not enough training or staff to lift heavy objects correctly, being on their feet all day, unpaid overtime.

      • Or working too hard and doesn't get breaks, not enough training or staff to lift heavy objects correctly, being on their feet all day, unpaid overtime

Why are you brown nosing for a company that would drop you for cheaper labour in an instant rather than looking after number 1
unpaid overtime no breaks that's on you for being to weak to stand up for yourselves
So we have mats for walking on and karens dribbling made up crap in the ozbargain forums

      Poor work ethic?

People can have aches and pains for all sorts of reasons such as a car accident or injury etc etc.

My father fell 7 meters only a stormwater pipe 40 years ago suffered for those 40 years before he died yet he still worked 50 to 70 hours a week.

I could also make the assumption that if you dont have any aches and pains you've never worked a day in you life either.

      • The OP has changed their comments and not once mentioned an injury
In fact they said that they sit all day and that was probably causing the problem.

As a person that has had several bad MVA i can assure you that the injury does not magically disappear but failing to move the injured part causes it to become worse

Haven't any of you karens heard "If you don't move it you loose it" ?

So yeah a poor work ethic can cause more pain so get off your flapping @ss a bit more

    • I have degenerative disk disease, as well as facit joint arthritis and a cyst pinching on my root nerve. Nothing to do with poor work ethic.

I exercise almost every day for about 40 minutes in the morning and stand up and take a walk every hour.

      The problems remain strangely enough?

Have any other wise words from your specialist credentialled mind or you just want to troll some more?

Their pocket spring beds are excellent.

  • Most people think mattress too soft causes neck and back pain. But too firm a mattress can too. You need to Goldilocks the ideal mattress.

    • Second this. You can also find Karl on Whirlpool. His insights helped me in my recent purchase (where I spent more than I would have normally but went for pocket spring system given my firm settling into middle age…)

Maybe I should just comment here since I was mentioned and so vegemite2008 doesn't need to search for the info.

Your first question seems to be around mattress trials, All of the bed in a box companies offer trials. However this does not mean bed in a box is your answer. They are the answer for some people. But you may not fall into a category that a bed in a box mattress would work. I would predict that they wouldn't work for you as you have neck and back problems. Bed in a box are notorious for having really firm springs.

This question of yours here - I am looking for suggestions and recommendations from people that have neck/back pain and have managed to find a mattress that will actually offer you a better sleep.

I'm not sure of your bodyweight or age, but you need to realize that these two metrics are extremely important when predicting which mattress will work for you.

If you ask this question and a 24 year old that weighs 70kg answers you "I've had a koala mattress for 8 years and it's been perfect, get one of them"

And you are 65 years old and weigh 95kgs, you are going to have a really bad time on a koala. This is a cold hard fact. As we age, and the heavier we get, the more "help" we need from the mattress. It gets more and more important to "get it right".

Now, I'm not saying you are 65kgs and weight 95kgs. It's more that I'm trying to establish a scale. on one end of the scale,

lower age (sleep on anything) and light (mattress takes ages to dip)

on the other end of the scale

higher age (requires precise firmness matching) and higher weight (quality foams to prevent dipping). Of course there is everything in between.

The main thing to establish before asking which mattress will help you is, How old are you? How much do you weigh? and there's one more question, where do you live?

Where you live is important because If you are in perth you are going to have different options to if you are in melbourne, and different agin if you are in sydney.

    Whats you back diagnosis?

  • Interested in one of the mattress trials.

For the 'free' mattress so you can return it?

Yeah nah, head into a real bedding store and try some out. Generally for bad backs, a 'firm' one is better. Something like the firm from Madison is good.

Good idea to go into a store and try it out.

Maybe have a sleepover in the store for 2 weeks 🤔

    • definitely - if you're in perth as per your profile, then perhaps consider quokka

    Just ensure it's firm.

    That's my 2 cents.

  • You need to make strategic use of pillows and cushions if you have back/hip/shoulder issues or joint pain. You rest your knees/arm/hand on cushions and hug a fat cushion and place a cushion between your knees when sleeping on side. You can even place a cushion under your hip/legs to get better sleeping posture. I use about 5 cushions while I sleep, and I sleep really well in any bed when I do that.

Also get a good ergonomic pillow.

  • I have a bad back and used to wake up in pain all the time cos my lower back kept sinking into my 10 year old mattress. I have l5/s1 mild herniated disc

I got a sleeingduck half n half 6 months ago and have been having great sleeps since. It’s not as soft when I side-sleep, but that’s why I have half medium and half firm. I was really worried about chabeing beds and it being worse, but it’s been much better. But some of that may just be its new and not sinking!

Initially I found the firm side too hard to sleep on and woke up aching, but it seems to depend if my backs sore already, I sleep on the firm, if it’s not sore I sleep on the medium

I’ve also found side sleeping better with the right neck height and small pillow between legs, has helped with the twisting pain I used to wake up with

  • I personally would go for a firmer bed but its a very personal choice go and lay on a heap of beds to get a idea. The most comfortable bed you find after laying on it a minute may not be feel the same after a night.

Find the most comfortable bed then choose the next firmest one.

Dont have too big a pillow keep you spine and neck as straight as possible. Some people prop their head neck up with to many pillows not good for the spine but also restricts your breathing.

Your bed has 2 purposes only dont watch tv or read in bed.
Once you've slept dont lay in bed for longer than you need.

  • Not sure if you’ve already tried this. Pillow and bed combination, may help. If you sleep on your back, you need a low pillow on a relatively firm bed…?

Loot n Plunder’s suggestions for move more often would definitely help. For some people stress makes them unconsciously tense at their neck and shoulders. Sit/stand desk would too, if that’s a possibility.

    All the best.
