2009 VE Commodore Transmission Having Issues: Looking for Advice

G'Day OzBargain, I own a 2009 Holden VE Commodore International (3.6L V6) with a 4 speed 4L60E transmission.

I've recently been having transmission issues, particularly with erratic shifting behaviour, more specifically:

  • On takeoff, the car seems to skip 2nd gear entirely, and will only shift out of 1st gear when I rev high (around 4k revs) and let off the accelerator, and only then it will shift into 3rd gear.

  • When cruising at around 70-80km/h it will slip into 2nd gear (as reported by OBD2, but revs drop to 500rpm which is weird), unless I hold the throttle to maintain some revs. Normally at this speed it should be sitting in 3rd or 4th gear, but the car also seems reluctant to shift into 4th, but has done on occasion.

Today I took the transmission sump out and drained the old fluid (which was a nightmare, (profanity) GM and their (profanity) design) and inspected (and cleaned) the sump for any metal parts, of which there were none.

Does anyone have any advice on next steps to diagnose the issue? For reference, I'm a uni student who doesn't have much in the bank.

This car also guzzles petrol (even more so now), so I don't really want to put a new transmission in this thing, and I'd rather scrap it or sell it as a fixer upper. It also costs me an arm and a leg to insure as a P plater with a V6.

I'd also like to get a new car because I've had too many issues with this thing, and the running costs are high. My budget is around $10k and I want something manual, that is DIY friendly, because I'm passionate about working on my car and driving it for fun.

Put it back together and trade it in on a Toyota. They're very easy to work on, not that you'll be doing much more than basic servicing.

    • That's definitely the direction I'm heading towards.

I want something manual with a good modding community behind it. I'm leaning towards an 86 (would have to save a bit more), or perhaps an MR2.

… isnt going to be much cheaper for P plater…

        Get a corolla.

Subaru? Good for mods as lots of parts are interchangable between models. Also have a fairly good mod community.

Buy a Camry. Only mod you will need is the twin tissue boxes on the rear parcel shelf.

  • Did you notice any improvement after the service? I remember with a Honda CRV we had, it needed the transmission flushed and then re-filled.

    • Nope, it didn't really improve anything.

  • could be Sungear failure, torque converter failure, etc.

the 4L60E is not the most reliable gearbox..

if the change of transmission fluid has not rectified the issues then it could most likely need a rebuild /replacement.

If you fix the transmission then you can guarantee the timing chains will stretch next. The VE RattleTec ownership experience cycle continues.

    • Hahahaha mate don't worry, the belt carked it before the transmission (about 20,000kms ago)

    Is uncle Ian around?

Uncle Ian's cigarettes make scents. Cheers

Come on Rolts, you know that Uncle Ian™ only works on "Sat'dy"… And it's going to cost you a box of darts and a carton of piss for him to even look at it…

The usually, Winnies & slab of VB? Next Sat'dy okay? Or is he still cleaning out the E10 out of that sh1tbox of Jimmy's?

Get a Corolla manual, chuck a modern head unit in it. Next thing you've got a reliable, cheap car that is fun to drive with modern day connectivity. Winning all round.

  • Sounds like fluid pressure isn't getting up enough to actuate the transmission, if the fluid flush doesn't fix it i'd consider chucking it.

get a Korean or Japanese car and have many years of issue free driving.

  • You won't be able to get an 86 within your 10k budget. You could look at an nb mx5, liberty, g3 wrx. Maybe an xr6? Think it's tough to find one of those in a manual though. There's the xr5 as well. I've previously owned an 86, fun and easy to work on car, great in the corners but slow.

Put a Chevy badge on it and sell it for a profit
