Does Anyone Use Grammarly?

So; A comment in, another thread mad me think; I used to, see zillions of adds for Grammarly plastered over; social media.

And always thought "Does anyone really use this? Who uses it? Is this some GenZ thing? Is it a smartphone app or what? Is it for Americans?"

Does anyone here use it?

Edit: More people use it than I'd have guessed… over 30% by the poll so far.

Edit 2: I'm especially amused that at least a couple of people have read this post and not spotted the heavy irony in the opening paragraph. Do we need an app for that as well? (FWIW the syntax was inspired by Terry Pratchett/Carrot.)

  • Back in Uni it was pretty handy. Found it quite a bit smarter than built in grammar tools for office. Not really necessary day to day unless your job is writing emails.

    • unless your job is writing emails.

What would someone's title be for that job?

I should more often use it. Probably but.

I got flashbacks to those bloody World of Tanks ads just from reading that.

Not sure what I am doing different now- the right internet filters or just not using YouTube as much, but fortunately these days I am not being inundated with those damn ads.

You forgot ManScaped, Blue Chew and all the other random dick pills that showed up for a hot minute

    With sentences, like that, the OP; should probably, give it, a try;

  • Only for work, to keep my tone and grammar consistent.

Does it stop you from sending snarky emails? Asking for a friend.

      • +2

        legitimately, yes

I used it in uni for google docs because it wasn't picking up on all my errors and grammar. It was handy for when I needed it, but will admit that it is annoying now that I don't need it and it keeps covering parts of my screen when there's an error.

    • +2

now that I don't need it

keeps covering parts of my screen when there's an error.

      maybe you still do 😆

      • +1

        HAHAHA you're not wrong!

errors are more acceptable when i'm just chatting to my friends XD

To answer your question, yes, someone uses Grammarly. Not me, and not you, but someone does

  • +2

I used it for a while and then I realised I spent too much time correcting it. It's suitable for poor > average English levels.

  • +4

If you have a passable grasp of written English, you shouldn't need it. I've noticed a fair amount of Reddit users are international students using it to translate barely comprehensible English to understandable; it's also a privacy nightmare.

    • You can intuit English just by reading and watching TV. There's no shortage of English out there.

You can also use CNN to have non surgical brain removal….

Just parse everything through Cgpt or Copilot

  • I prefer using the Hemingway editor. I feel like I actually learn how to improve my sentences on there. Plus Grammarly skews American English and makes you sound like a seppo (the greatest sin)

I know a couple of dyslexic people at work that swear by it.

    • +2

Yes, I questioned someone about its value and when they brought this up about themselves it made perfect sense. As always, different strokes for different folks.

  • +2

No, I never hearing of it.

By the, sounds of the, way you worded; that post. Sounds like you - need to use it.

That's the second comment that seems to have missed it.

Sounds like some people need a subscription app to detect irony.

  • Sometimes to check things. It still does a better job over ChatGTP, CoPilot, Gemini, etc.
It will be redundant soon with AI inbuilt in Windows & browsers now.

  • I use the free version of quilbot, 120 word limit is fine for paragraphs

Good for cover letters and random bits n bobs

  • +1

I’ve used Grammarly extensively at work. Interestingly, the free and paid versions contradict each other on some stylistic aspects.

  • Yeah I use it for a paid subscription free from work

  • +1

I use it for checking uni assignments (we get a discounted subscription through Griffith). It's been really helpful for making sure my citations are formatted correctly, picking up things like active vs. passive voice and helping me reduce word count.

I use Ginger software. Far more Dyslexic friendly than Grammarly

  • Use it at work as I write a lot of emails to external customers and I find it great.
It's comes into its own when you're in a hurry, after already writing dozens of e-mails and can't afford mistakes.

  • +1

Back in uni, yep, used to use it.

But for the last 7 years I have uninstalled it

Have tried Grammarly and Microsoft Editor (built in to Outlook and Word but there's a browser extension too)
I like LanguageTool the best as it is less intrusive - search in your extension store
If you pay, it can do AI edits/suggestions too

Whichever you use, make sure to change option to Australian English

I love Grammarly and use it on everything I write including here. Recently I have been given 3 free premium suggestions per day. It has improved my spelling and grammar. It is most helpful as English is not my first language.
