Stuck with Bone Conduction Headphones Choice, Any Advice?

I want to have bone conduction for running and cycling and possibly swimming.
Wanted to get Shokz Openrun but their normal sale price is $150 and they have not been on sale for a while and are currently around $220 with some rare exceptions.
Got Mojawa Run Plus from Amazon which may even be better but something happenned with the order and it never reached me. Unable to re-order as the bumped the price up.

There are lots of Chinese brands on ebay and aliexpress but I am unsure how usable they are.
Soundpeats from Amazon could be a good value but they only offer open air not bone conduction. I need no air leakage as I will also use them around people in crowded places.

It is unlikely as I have been searching for a while now, but maybe I missed something? Thanks

  • Before I say anything, what brand of Cochlear implant do you use currently?

    • I do not have any Cochlear implant, my hearing is normal. I need a commercial bone conduction headphone in order not to be run over a car or electric scooter and not be killed. Also to be able to hear people around me if anyone says anything. No use at home on the sofa intended.

      • Oh, my apologies I totally misunderstood you and my mind went off on a tangent. Nevermind I have nothing to offer in that case, sorry :P

I cycle with one in-ear (left). Staying alive is more important than stereo imaging.

      Cochlearâ„¢ is a brand. https://www.cochlear.com/

  • I bought OpenShokz Trekz about 2 years ago. Have you tried FB marketplace? Bone conduction headphones are very easy to clean. I would have no qualms about buying second hand.

    • I did. hardly anything in my area… Thanks for the idea though.

Pedl has them for $185, if you can get 99Bikes to price beat them, bringing it down to $175 assuming you aren't a club member.

Amazon live chat - sometimes they'll credit the difference so you pay the original price you paid + use the credit… just explain your situation and you may get lucky

Stick an CamelCamel alert on the Shokz then order once it drops again. I'm onto my third set, admittedly I stepped on one pair so had to replace.

Like you I wanted something I can run with or go to the gym without worrying that I'm not hearing something important. I also work in a role that has many calls/videoconferences etc and I don't like having over-ear headphones all day. The Shokz (particularly Pro model) are really light and I can wear all day without problem.

They aren't great in noisy environments (e.g. plane, London tube) as you would assume but for most environments I find them perfect.

Great customer service too. I had a pair start to falter just before 2 year warranty was up after almost daily use in Singapore with high humidity, and they replaced them no questions asked.

    • Apparently Mojawa is even better, this is why I wanted to try them so much. At the same time, Chinese brands are so tempting, around $40-60 for a pair!

  • I dont have any tips as it was given as a gift to me.
All i can say is that the Shokz Openrun is crazy good.
Well built and does exactly what i needed it to i.e. i can hear what's going when i'm cycling whilst listening to my favourite music.

  • Putting aside swimming, we (my wife stole them from me) have a pair of Plantronics Backbeat Fit 3150. Unfortuneately discontinued, but there's a few pairs on eBay etc last time I checked. They hook over your ears, and are a sortof in-ear design. They dont completely block your ear canal, but let other sounds in. Really good for running.

As for work, I use Jabras Evolve 2 65s with a boom mic that flicks up so I can quickly mute myself before swearing on work calls.. Over ear, but not too uncomfortable, and I spend probably 5 hrs on zoom a day and have a big head. Not cheap, but its a work tool…
